Philly Arcade Laws...?

Post by Rurouni_Fencer »

I was made aware of an interesting law in my nearby fellow city of Philadelphia concerning arcade machines -

I had no idea about such a law when I saw this at a local comic book store, but my question is simply "why?" I'm guessing Energy Conservation..?

(Also, this store was rocking a 6-player X-Men cab in the back.. Officially kick-ass in my book!)

Be glad it's the Spidey side scroller switched off, when you beat the enemies the let out this god-awful scream/whine sound - it permeates an entire arcade.

I can see this going two ways: 1) it's a tax created purely to generate revenue any way they can, or 2) it's a result of a law being used in an unintentional way because somebody was sloppy with their legal language, like that couple of days when Greece banned video games entirely over a flap about gambling machines.

A double tax the way I see it. Place of business already gets taxed for operating a business. A license tax to operate an arcade? I can see for serving alcohol or food safety issues.

ha. I go to the same comic shop sometimes. I prefer the one on second called 'brave new world' though.

The sad thing about that 6 player cab in the back is that the monitors really need some love. At least they need to sync up together so it is a seamless transition. The one on the left is like an inch lower! They need to let me in the back of that thing and fix it up! ha.

Oh man, I know! When I saw that thing, my jaw dropped at the mere sight that this little comic shop on South St. had a 6-player X-Men cab, and then I wanted to cry at how poorly they're taking care of it.. Granted I know nothing about cabinet maintenance, so it could be pretty tricky for all I know.. The left screen is definitely drooping lower than the right screen, and it looks like the tube will go out any day now...

This must be some kind of odd ball taxation thing in PA! Ridiculous IMO!

Tell the arcade/place to stick it to the man and just rock and roll without the license. Who in PA is actually going to know this "law" to enforce it?!
