Colecovision

Post by daito_kid »

So, I went to Pennsylvania and to my joy found a Colecovision, and now have four games: Donkey Kong, Zaxxon, Pop-eye, and Mouse Trap. Does anyone else own this system on the forums, and if so what's a few games you enjoy? I've been really enjoying all of my library so far, good arcade, addictive, goodness.
My Console Collection: 3DS (JPNS), Dreamcast (US and JPNS), Genesis, N64 (US and JPNS), iPod Touch, NES, Xbox, Famicom, Colecovision, Super Famicom, Neo Geo AES, Sega Saturn, DS LL (JPNS), Neo Geo Pocket Color.

The only notable games I have for the system, besides the pack-in Donkey Kong titles, are Slither - for use with the roller module, Turbo - for use with the wheel module, and Pac-Man Collection - an unofficial title, perhaps not available anymore since the publisher recently decided to close shop and just focus on development.

I'm not a big fan of Turbo, though it's one of the systems most known titles, but Slither is great. Pac-Man Collection is virtually arcade perfect, including the kill screens (not that I've gotten that far).

I was never able to motivate myself to get many games for ColecoVision, since so many of the titles were just ripped off from Atari titles. That said, some of them seem to be good rip offs (bad artists emulate, good artists steal, so to speak), like Ladybug (think Pac-Man with insects and trap doors).

I've played one of the beer licensed versions of Tapper in an actual bar, although I've heard the ColecoVision version is butchered by comparison. The game is still on some top 20 ColecoVision lists though (which perhaps says something about ColecoVision in general?).

The other note is that the ColecoVision has a very healthy homebrew scene. Tons of ports and occasional new titles are being released frequently, like the unofficial sequel Ghost n Zombies that was released not too long ago. Tons of MSX titles get ported to the system as well, since the two systems were nearly identical in architecture.

Here are some sites that sell ColecoVision homebrew carts:

http://opcodegames.com/ (No longer sells, but still develops - as well as developing a Super Module)

I had a problem with mine as well, I needed an F-Pin female to RCA male, converter (See link: http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=htt ... m=1&itbs=1)

But yeah, once I plugged it in, it's been great. One thing I notice is with all of my games, I plug them in first, turn on the system and then hit the reset button, which makes the games load, otherwise the games never load. Also, DK is really a great port from the arcade and is a blast. Zaxxon is another solid port. I feel like the Colecovision was like the NEO GEO AES of its day, with all of the arcade ports, and superior graphics.

Congrats on a great console!

Didn't see any guide under Topics above. You definitely got the best game; the pack-in Donkey Kong. There are others, as others mentioned above. Maybe the 2600 expansion module?

The only Coleco I have is a pair of the "Baseball" controllers.
I bought them on a whim, since they are unique. Maybe a later mod?
Roller controller to work as a spinner knob for Tempest, Tron and Tac Scan.

Colecovision was my first system. Unfortunately, I sold mine a long time ago.

The games I used to like were Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr, Popeye, Frogger, Lady Bug, Venture, Zaxxon, and Space Fury. I also had Smurf Rescue, which was hilariously bad, but worth playing to see that, yes, Smurfs can die from a simple tuft of grass.

I still have one from the old days , about 30 boxed games and 15 loose cartridges or so , I even have the 2600 Ad on , a steering wheel with pedal for the game Turbo and a Trackball , all boxed .
The 2 controllers from above also , i remember they came with a boxing game called Rocky where you needed them for .
Haven't played it in years , i don't think i could use it on a HDTV anyways , wont sell it though because of nostalgic reasons .
These games where no Atari rip offs but Arcade ports like on the Atari only much better .
First system with " Arcade Perfect " graphics :!:

My favorites where , Lady Bug , Centipede , Donkey kong ( JR.) , Frogger , Pengo and MR. Do!
