I just bought a October 2006 Original 60 GB PS3 with the emotion engine for true PS2 compatibility.
I'm disappointed to find that none of my PAL or NTSC-J PS2 games will play on it, which seriously puts a dent in my library and why I wanted this model PS3.
Is there a reliable hardware hack or software hack that would allow me to run PS2 games in other regions? What about anything to allow the PS3 to read PS2 backups? I'm fairly handy with a soldering iron if needbe.

I thought you could NTSC-J PS2 games on ps3 60gb. there are 2 options possible. stick in an original ps2 game then open up the console remove stick ntsc j into the ps3, game on. never tried so don't say it was my fault. the other is swap magic method or USB Advance. Don't blame me for anything because haven't even opened up my PS3(still works).

I don't know of any hardware/software hacks (but I haven't really been looking either). To clarify the PS3 console is not region free; however nearly 100% of the games released for it are so they can be played on any region PS3. Older games such as those from PS2 are not coded to be region free and will only play on consoles that match their respective regions.

I have a JP PS3 and I would like to play some PAL/NTSC-US PS2titles. Is there a way without opening up my ps3?

you could try swap magic.
I heard of people using it to run PS2 backups

No - Only the 60GB, 20GB and 80GB MGS4 machines can play PS2 games and then you're stuck with the console region I.E. There are no softmod hacks etc, swapmagic won't work because of the PS3 eject system. you can try removing the lid and swapping discs but people report varying success

I don't really feel sorry for you. Why did you not research this before? The PS2 is not region free, why did you assume PS2 functionality, or DVDs for that matter, would be region free on the PS3?Satoshi_Matrix wrote:I just bought a October 2006 Original 60 GB PS3 with the emotion engine for true PS2 compatibility.

I have done many searches on this over the years and come up with nothing. Is there a reliable hardware hack or software hack that would allow me to run PS2 games in other regions? What about anything to allow the PS3 to read PS2 backups? I'm fairly handy with a soldering iron if needbe.
Why even try to give this sort of "advice" when you know darn well that you are just shooting your mouth off?benderx wrote:I thought you could NTSC-J PS2 games on ps3 60gb. there are 2 options possible. stick in an original ps2 game then open up the console remove stick ntsc j into the ps3, game on. never tried so don't say it was my fault. the other is swap magic method or USB Advance. Doesn't that involve leaving the cover off the PS3 in order to do the swap? You'd be MUCH better off just using a real PS2.
