Hello,
I am just look at some advice on which OS to buy
I am running macbook(core2dou 2ghz, 9400M) and I am looking to install windows on it to play retro games, say from early 90's all the way to 2005-07 maybe.
Both systems are almost same price, even though xp is a 2002 OS(maybe even 2001).
I thought I would install XP because maybe its more retro friendly and not resource demanding?
but then I hear its all the same, as windows 7 is just as good as XP but newer or refined maybe
I got no idea.
I can also install windows 98
Whats your advice?
XP or WIn7?

Re: XP or WIn7?
If you only want to play old games, XP Pro would be the better choice. It is less demanding and will perform well on your Mac. I will however admit that I have never played with 7 on a Mac. I do enjoy 7, I think it is one of the finest OS's period (even though my onboard soundcard is not supported yet), but in your sitiuation XP is a better choice.
Re: XP or WIn7?
I'm not getting into debate on XP vs. 7, it's generally pointless and seems to bring out the worst fanboy in everyone. What I will say is this -- if your intent is to play older games, XP is definitely the better choice. Many, many games were updated for compatibility with XP, but no farther. (GOG includes Vista (and therefore 7) compatibility in their releases, but that's only a relatively small catalogue of games still.) I have a netbook with XP on it, and one of the many things I do with it is play retro games. There's just too many complications and workarounds as you go up to Vista, and subsequently 7.

Use 7, there is no reason to use XP any longer.
Also, since XP Windows has incorporated a little feature called compatibility mode. If you can't get one of your DOS/Windows 95 games to run normally, heres a simple thing that you can do that will get it to run 99% of the time.
Right click on game icon and in one of the panes, there is a run in compatibility mode for: and select windows XP or 95 or whatever, then check the box that says run in 640x480 mode, then 256 color mode.
Fixed.

Older. Not wiser.
Re: XP or WIn7?
I'd use 64 bit 7, and virtualize for older games.

Agree with fastbilly1. For compatibility and SPEED I think XP right now will be your better choice.
Every new operating system has great new features, but can bog your computer down.
I swear its a continuing plot of sales in Hardware-OS upgrades.

You're right. It's not like the OS vendors add new features when they release a new version of their OS. And even if they did, it's not like a new feature would cause an OS to take more resources than it did without it.CRTGAMER wrote:I swear its a continuing plot of sales in Hardware-OS upgrades.

The only way to deactivate the ray beam and fight back the vampire alien threat is with a complicated series of foot patterns on the device's control board that looks remarkably like a DDR pad. We will all praise this man for saving our lives and buy him a mountain of stuffed animals.
