I would say it's a mix between 6 and 7. Both have excellent boards and excellent minigames. I'd probably lean slightly more towards 6, but that's just down to preference. In the grand scheme of Mario Party, 4/5 are pretty bad, and 8 is just downright awful. It's no wonder they're moving to 'Wii Party' instead of Mario Party 9. :p

If you have an N64 around, get Mario Party 3 -- it's pretty much the pinnacle of Mario Party! (I know there's a lot of love for 1, but three had much better boards, and the minigames weren't quite so controller destroying. ;))

Mario Party 7 is the best! I don't get why people say the mic doesn't work well, it works excellently for me.

If you play Mario Party 7 and really enjoy the mic, try playing Odama!

so, the general consensus seems to be 7.
What's the actual deal with the microphone? Is it only for the 1-player events? because I can't see how 4 people simultaneously shouting into it would work.

For some mini-games, you take turns using the microphone. For other games, one person uses the microphone and the others use their controllers.

If the mic works consistently, it's actually fun to use.

EDIT: Does anyone have the NTSC-J version of MP7? Does it use Japanese or English words for command & control?

I think some of the most fun games are the games that 1 player uses the mic and 3 use controllers. It's unique and gives variety to the game. It also gets people to make noise instead of sitting there, mindlessly staring at the TV. It's also much more laid back so nobody gets angry when they lose repeatedly.

I'm kinda surprised at some of the thoughts here. Whilst 7 is the only MP I haven't played, so I can't speak for that, 5 was far and away my favourite of the other gamecube mario party games. It's also likely a bit cheaper, so well worth considering.

To be honest, even at it's lowest points (4 and 8 imo) the mario party series is fun for a (not amazingly) quick bash every now and then.

You haven't seen me and my friends/ brothers play Mario Party. The whole session is just loud noise. I took it on holiday last year when I went away with my friends and we were playing number 4. Remember that game where you have to push the detonator, and by pure bad luck, it might be the one that you pick that sets off the Bowser bomb? It was pandemonium whenever that game came up!

Yeah I was considering 5 for that very reason - the microphone games seem a lot more collectable and therefore expensive.
