Given how the sole reason for Vaan's existence in Final Fantasy XII was because they were worried that girls wouldn't buy it without a prettyboy lead I'd say you aren't far off.

Quite simply, the whole "Girly Guy" thing proved to be popular last generation, so that's why it's been around for so long. I find it kinda funny that Lightning is the most manly protagonist Final Fantasy has seen in years.

I believe many of the JRPGs out this generation are great. I don't play them though. Why? I just can't take any more of those emo J-Pop looking characters. Some of them I can't even tell if they are a man or a woman. The dialogues are getting too cheesy. Makes me think the games are made for jr highschool girls.

but but...I dreamed of being Balthier and scoring Ashe, surely he's the prettiest man the FF series has ever had. Oh wait. That's man not boy who even though has hit puberty seams to shave every 10 seconds so as to avoid showing a bit of facial hair.

Unfortunately, strategy RPGs seem to be all the rage right now..

Seriously I haven't played the original FF Tactics. I liked the gameplay of tactics advance very much, but the story was so poor, so I can't get myself interest in the DS sequel.

You guys think I should try the original FFT? I heard it has a good story, as opposed to FFTAdvance

If you liked the gameplay, then definitely. FFT's story is NOTHING like FFTA's.
