Any RPG (not Strategy!) Suggestions For XBox360..?

Post by Rurouni_Fencer »

I've been out of the whole RPG scene for about 10 years now. After I went away to school, I fell into a deep comfort zone consisting mainly of action/adventure, sports, and fighting games. Now that I've finished Red Dead Redemption, I'm looking for a new game to really delve into and I miss playing turn-based RPGs. Problem is, however, I've noticed that in the past 7-8 years, everybody seems to be making/playing Strategy/grid-based RPGs. I tried Final Fantasy Tactics when it came out for PS, and didn't care for it; and while Disgaea definitely held my interest a little bit, it still leaves me craving the old "JRPG"s I used to love, (I guess that's what they call the standard RPG nowadays..like DQ, FF, and CT.)
Anyways, I've played and loved Lufia, Final Fantasy, Breath of Fire, Chrono Trigger & Chrono Cross, and I want to try something more modern. I bought Final Fantasy XIII, but after about 3 story hours of disappointment, I've decided to try something else.
I'm looking for something on the XBox 360, since I'm something of an Achievement-Bum; but if there is something I really should be playing that's only on either Wii or PS3, I'd love to hear about it! Personally, whether cliche or not by today's standards, I still enjoy the anime/cartoony RPGs, but I like any art style, really...

So far, the big ones I've heard about are Tales of Vesperia (probably the next one I'll pick up - if I can find the Special Edition,) and Demon Soul, (is this an RPG or an adventure game?)

What am I missing?
Any suggestions would be incredibly appreciated!

(And again - NO strategy Role-playing or grid-based systems. I already own and tried Disgaea 3 and Record of Agarest War, and just can't get into them just yet.)

Demon's Souls is a third person action RPG with a fairly extensive combat engine and a punishing difficulty. The kind of difficulty that really puts you into the notion that you're taversing hostile enemy territory. There's also a pretty good crafting system that lets you decide what kind of weapon you want to weild and them buff it up. And the weapons you use matters; a two handed sword does poorly in tight corridors because your weapon is not allowed to clip through the walls.

Hm...off hand Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon come to mind. These are some decent JRPGs from Mist Walker for the 360.

Eternal Sonata, it is one of the best RPGs for the 360. The visuals are simply beautiful, the gameplay is unique and fun, the story is well done (if you don't feel sad for Polka you have no soul) and the music is incredible.

There's not much available for the 360 (Or any current -gen console, to be honest)

Here's what I can recall off the top of my head, if you want a strict JRPG

Enchanted Arms (also on PS3) - Pretty by the books RPG. It was the first on the 360. It was good since it was the only one, but I'd try to play some of the other offerings first, as they are a bit better

Tales of Vesperia - Tied for my favorite 360 game next to Lsot Odyssey. If you like the Tales games, you'll like this. It's great.

Blue Dragon - Done by the same guys that did Chrono Trigger, and it has the same distinctive artwork (which is a turn off for some). I enjoyed this game quite a bit, but a lot of people seemed to dislike it because it looks "childish"

Lost Odyssey - By the same team as Blue Dragon. A more serious RPG. This could have been a Final Fantasy game if they had just labelled it as such. Highly recommended, and a lot of stats to max out if you're into that

Eternal Sonata (also on PS3) - More of a Star Ocean/Tales of battle system. Very convoluted story. I loved the graphics though.

Star ocean (also on PS3) - Can't really have an opinion here. Haven't played it

Last Remnant - Again, not really a traditional RPG. You don't have direct control over your party, only kind of a general idea of what they'll do, which gets incredibly frustrating after a while. You also can only make weapons for your main character. Your party members will just randomly make their own weapons with what's in your inventory. This game could have been decent, but the execution was awful.

Infinite Undiscovery - Didn't like it at first, but it grew on me quite a bit. It feels like a single player MMORPG

I'm definitely liking what I see.. Thanks for all the suggestions! It looks like I'll be checking out Blue Dragon, Tales of Vesperia, and Eternal Sonata pretty soon!

Those are the three I'd recommend for the 360. You mentioned the Wii tho so I'll state that I really enjoyed Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of a New World even tho it's not nearly as great as the original ToS. And also Sakura Wars, but I only played PS2 version.
I have a ton of games listed at my store's site: Super Smash Video Games

Breath of Death VII: The Beginning and Dungeon Explorer are super cheap XBox Live Indie games you might want to check out. Breath of Death is more of a traditional old school JRPG with black humor and parody thrown in, and Dungeon Explorer is a throwback to vintage PC Dungeon crawling.

Lost Odyssey has some of the best writing I've seen in gaming. Period.

While the main story main not be too strong, the lost dreams aspect is flawless. I am utterly surprised about how well this game sucked me in.

It's been years since I played a JRPG that wasn't on the snes and I'm glad this was the first. Can't recommend enough.
Don't that just look oh so tasty?
