That's why I play on Italian servers. They are the most laid back gamers I have ever met. I don't know what is worse. British people or Greeks...probably Greeks, but mostly cause 90% of Greeks in online games are teenagers.. Once in WoW I was loot master (random dungeon run, not guild run) and 2 people wanted a robe and one of them was Greek, and he whispered me that I should give it to him, with the only reason being we were from the same country. Just for that I gave it to the other guy.J T wrote:Another reason I don't like online gaming as much as in person is that when my friends and I talk with each other, we don't sound like this:

Thank you ever so much for thisJ T wrote:Another reason I don't like online gaming as much as in person is that when my friends and I talk with each other, we don't sound like this:
Back in high school me and a couple of friends would go to the nearest persons house and play the original Xbox for a while till it was time for baseball practice (I didn't play but they did). I remember this one occasion where in the span of 1 school week, we beat Red Dead Revolver from start to finish. Now though everyone has an Xbox 360 and we just start a party and just chat it up. Sure we go to each others house every once awhile but we mostly just hang out or go see a movie if we ever get together.

Re: gaming in person VS online gaming
Games that have no online are just as bad as games that have only online/mainly online features.
I bought Left4Dead the day it came out for Xbox (without checking that it is only 2player offline) and took it to a friends place where we planned on playing 4player campaign all night. Instead we start there like idiots taking turns playing only two people at a time, online or off.
I understand why some games do this but it is really a huge pain in the ass. My friends and I are big into playing games together or LANing so a lot of the time we end up bringing another TV and Xbox over so that we can all play together, in the same room.
A lot of games have problems like this and it is really a huge pain in the ass. I really dislike that most of the time I have to consider buying another console and another copy of the game so that we can enjoy gaming like we used to.

I like a combination of both gaming in person and online gaming. I have had great memories of LAN parties on Xbox with Halo 2 and Nintendo 64 with classics like Super Smash Bros., Mario Kart 64, Goldeneye 007, and many more over the years.

Re: gaming in person VS online gaming
I almost never play games locally anymore and it really bites. Most of my friend's are not gamers and the few gamer friends i had have moved away.
I remember in high school I used to LAN out in Brooklyn with 4 of my friends and play with all these older kids and people we didn't know. After a few years we were regulars and had tournaments and everything (i'm still using the mouse in won in a MoH:AA tourney from 9 years ago). Then college came and it made it very hard to go from albany all the way to brooklyn.
Even after that we used to have console parties at my friend's house and LAN some gamecubes. Taking turns on Ikaruga and MvC2 blew my mind. Some of the most intense Mario Kart games i had ever played.
I still have a few friends (like.....2) I talk about games a lot with, but theres not enough time to just sit back and chill / game with them (even on xbox live).

Re: gaming in person VS online gaming
I think mainly online features is worse. In 20 years, when it's really difficult to hook up the system to the internet, and there's no servers to host the game, let alone anyone that wants to play it, the game won't do anything.Para wrote:Games that have no online are just as bad as games that have only online/mainly online features.
You can't play games from your childhood when the children today grow up, and you can't play a game that was truly great ever again.

Re: gaming in person VS online gaming
I really enjoy local multiplayer but most people I know only play online multiplayer, so I don't play local multiplayer very often.
Re: gaming in person VS online gaming
I usually search around for titles with 4-player local multiplayer. It's not always that I do this, but once in a while (maybe once a month) I get together with my friends to drink and play some board and video games.
It's a shame even local 2-player is becoming rarer and rarer.

To be fair most Wii games have local multiplayer.

Re: gaming in person VS online gaming
I am most certainly anti-online. Sure, I had fun with Super Mario Kart and Killer Instinct way back but in the last 5 years or so, I've become nearly completely disenchanted with it.
That guy in the video JT posted has major issues - even playing paintball in real life, I don't know anyone that aggro O_O. It feels like 99% of the players like that out there, seem to have no problem with cheating, cursing, and more factors that would make in-person gaming very uncomfortable or unacceptable.
I've played multi-player in-person for decades and if someone was cheating, they'd lose their turn. If someone was dropping f-bombs (or even 1!) someone's mom (with German Shepard ears) would pick it up and they'd get in trouble or get sent home. And if someone was gonna lose and they dropped the controller - no biggie, you'd still get the win-point - but if they went up and reset the system or turned off the TV, damn right they'd be kicked out of the "mini-tournament". That's not cool. All it really comes down to is poor-sportsmanship to me and online-play just encourages it because there really are no consequences to that kind of conduct. (I still remember in HS one of my teammates got benched for saying "damn" on the field - this was 1994 but still y'know).
Reasons like that keep me mostly offline. That and the fact that while Nintendo can ban cheaters, cheaters can use codes to un-ban themselves and continue to f-around (so glad there's no voice chat). My wife and I play Mario Kart Wii online together sometimes and it's fun but it's obvious when someone is cheating when you see 100 blue shells etc start to fly before the '321start' has commenced. We just play to do as good as we can and have fun while not caring about the racing score.
So with the cheaters outdoing the companies that run the online service and rage-anger-psycho-venting players, I'll stick with local play. It's nice having friends come over, having pizza & cokes, having a mini-tournament, and just trying to have fun with people you know and like, make in-person gaming much, much better and appealing overall.
