I'm back. And in need of help

Post by Reverend »

Hello all! I'm back from my 3 week adventure in Manhattan as a Pre-College Film Student and the School of Visual Arts. It was an amazing experienced and I can't wait for college next year (hopefully I do get to go to a film school).

Anyway, I got home and tried to play Super Smash Bros. Brawl with my friends, only to get a "Disk cannot be read" error. I was worried that Brawl was broken, but then I tested out numerous Gamecube and Wii games. None of the disks could be read.

Does anyone know what could be wrong with my Wii? It works fine except for the most important feature, reading disks. I think it may be a dirty laser lens, but I don't know. :(

try a disc cleaner -- maybe the lens is dirty.

That's what I'm thinking. I'll probably pick up some Nintendo brand Wii Lens cleaner later today. I also wanted to know what else might be wrong with it.

You angered it by not giving any attention for 3 weeks and it is rejecting you like a spurned mistress. I'd start checking whether any of your other valuables have been chucked into the street.

Were you able to successfully play Brawl on your Wii before your trip? A coworker of mine had Brawl break his Wii and he needed to send it in to Nintendo.

Brawl was working just fine before I left. What's more, it's not just brawl. The wii refuses to recognize any of my numerous Wii and Gamecube games.

I know that quite a few people had 'unable to read disc' dirty lens issues when Brawl came out.

Supposedly it was because Brawl (and most newer Wii games) are on dual-layer DVDs, which apparently requires the laser to penetrate the disc with more effort (or further?), which if it is dusty would be more difficult, resulting in the unreadable disc error.

Nintendo sells Official Wii cleaning kits for around $10, I think. Or you could try sending it in to NOA.

I'll try cleaning it first with the lens cleaner.

I've had problems with Brawl before, but always got it to work after a few tries. The thing is, now it won't read any of my Wii games or Gamecube games. Oh well, nothing to do now, but try and clean it. Sending it to NOA to be repaired is a pricey last resort.

This leads me to believe that it's just dusty.
If you've had some issues before, then it was probably just slightly dusty and having some trouble reading dual-layer DVDs specifically. The dust has probably gotten worse over time, eventually rendering the lens useless for reading any disc, dual-layered or not.

In the future, please choose a better thread title such as "Wii is having trouble reading game DVDs now".
