This is something that bugs me quite a bit in games lately. While there are some things I didn't like, especially the large number of online multiplayer achievements

I don't get it. Why even bother with achievements? And why would it upset anyone if you don't "achieve" everything in a game? Don't get me wrong, I prefer beating ninja gaiden undefeated, but just beating it period puts a smile on my face. Is it the achievement points that people want these days?
If so, I say nuts to that.

On one side I hate them because I feel they distract me from the main point of the game, and at times I get bored of the game because I have wasted so much time doing one task.
On the other side, they can give you a bit of a break while playing, sure its easy to kill people in a FPS but if there is a achievement to get 5 head shots in a row or something, it gives you something new to aim for while playing the main game.
I dont try to get all achievements, I dont bother with 'collect 100 of item' style ones and what not, but I feel they have a lot to add to game, its nice to feel your progress throughout a game.
I dont even play online and still like doing achievements for the reasons I mentioned above.

That makes sense to me, I just didn't understand at first why the achievements pissed you off.emwearz wrote:

Re: Games Beaten: 2010
Sometimes I find the lack of achievements/trophies awarded for the amount of effort put in to be annoying...I just beat the main story in Fallout 3 and only have something like 12% of the achievements after already sinking 25 or so hours into the game. Dragon Age was almost as bad - I have probably closer to 60 hours in that game and its expansion but only like 54% of all the achievements after beating both.
It's not just RPGs though. After beating RE5 I had like 25% of those and after sinking a whole lot of time into Unreal Tournament 3 (offline and online) I only had like 30%. Most games typically give you between 35%-55% for beating them through once on the standard settings.
The only two games I've ever 100%'d were the Sonic Genesis Collection and the PSN version of Gunstar Heroes (go figure!). Neither has trophies that require online play.

Re: Games Beaten: 2010
Sometimes achievements or trophies are tied to unlockables. For instance, as you progress in Red Faction Guerrilla, you'll inevitably begin unlocking "cheats," for when you want to goof off and do something ridiculous. Several of these are tied to achievements, meaning if I want to unlock everything, I have to go for the achievement. Do I know which ones? Of course not! But it's there, and the only way I'll find out is by getting them. Uncharted 2 has a system where achievements earn money that can be used to purchase unlockable content, such as additional costumes, infinite ammo, and concept art, but I'll never be able to get everything because 2 trophies require I play a single match of both types of multiplayer.
Second off, they provide new things to shoot for in the game. You can beat bosses, go for the unlocks, max out characters, and now also shoot for trophies. Adds more replay value.
Third, sometimes they provide interesting and challenging things to do for those that like things being slightly more difficult, such as the achievement in Dead Space where you beat the game with the Plasma Cutter, or the one in Half-Life 2 where you beat Ravenholm using only the gravity gun. I'm very interested in the One Bullet achievement for Half-Life 2: Episode 1, as it will make things tougher and perhaps provide a more intense experience.
What I dislike about multiplayer achievements is that they prevent me from doing everything in a game because I don't currently have all the necessary equipment or space to be able to hook my PS3 up to the Internet. I already can't play online multiplayer to begin with or access the PSN, and now it feels like they're reminding me how poor I am and kicking me while I'm down. It's like if you got all the way to Sephiroth in Final Fantasy 7 only to have the game suddenly end because you couldn't afford a special add on from Sony...better yet, it reminds me of that one bloody piece of heart I could never find in Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time because I didn't have the money to afford a Rumble Pak, thus making the Stone of Agony effectively worthless. To complete the game, I'm forced to buy a peripheral. I already coughed up a bunch of money for the game. I shouldn't have to buy more crap to find a piece of heart, unlock more money and cheat codes, or enjoy my game. Hence why I dislike multiplayer achievements.

NiGHTs was great fun, but I can't say I see it as a must own game. Its was entertaining to play, but not anything defining imo. However, I did very much enjoy it.
Block Game (AKA Quarth) was OK. It doesn't really leave me wanting more, which is possibly a crucial flaw with a puzzle game, but that besides, I enjoyed it whilst I was playing it.
Pokemon Stadium took me AAAAGGGEESSSS (levelling to level 100), but its done now. Its not great, but I still found it enjoyable enough. Im currently using the dodrio game boy (4x speed pokemon games!) to finish my pokedex for the first time. Only 4 more to go in all 3 versions (red, blue and yellow)!
Next Up: Red Steel (Wii), Shadow of the Colossus (PS2), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (NES) and Unirally (SNES). Getting closer to finishing my marathon!

1. Phantasy Star (GBA)
2. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Fall Of The Foot Clan (GB)
3. Super Mario Bros. 2 (GBA)
4. OutRun (GBA)
5. Super Street Fighter II Turbo Revival (GBA)
6. Mortal Kombat II (GB)
7. Viper Phase I (arcade)

Holy crap! noiseredux beat an arcade game! So I found this cab at my nephew's birthday today at one of those "fun-spot" kind of places. I wanted to play some lightgun games, but they were all occupied constantly. And I noticed a lonely cab in the corner -- I went over and saw Viper Phase 1. I had never heard of it, but to my surprise it was a vertical shmup, so I was thrilled. And guess what? It was set to free-play.
So there it is! My usual arcade-name, BRA is the third high score!
