Just curious what are some of the best NES ROM-hacks out there. (Reminder: descriptions and screenshots make threads fun :))

I personally like all of these:

especially this one: http://www.i-mockery.com/romhacks/satanicfreakbros/

EDIT: oh wait you said BEST rom hacks. Well these can kinda be called the best depending on your definition of "best".

The only one I've ever played is the infamous Super Mario Forever.

Also, do most rom hacks only work on the VirtuaNES emulator? I heard it was because most emulators emulate the 10 NES chip, and the VirtuaNES does not. Is it like that with all rom hacks, because I'm disappointed that I can't play some of these hacks on NesDS.

Extra Mario Bros and Mario Adventure come to mind.

EMB is a Super Mario Bros hack that replaces the standard Mario gameplay (8 worlds w/ 4 levels each) with something more akin to Metroid. In it, there's just one big gameworld with TONS of backtracking.

Mario Adventure is a SMB3 hack with some cool shit going on, like a day/night cycle, new graphics and revamped levels.

Reign of the Koopas, which is part of a series of 10 mini-hacks of Super Mario Bros. Features new graphics (made by the creator), and a new boss: Larry Koopa.

Personally, I'd love to see a series of Halo-themed hacks for the NES, but do hacks of different games (Contra, Blaster Master, Metroid, et al) but tie them together under a single series. That and an improvement and translation on the unlicensed Biohazard (Resident Evil) remake for the Famicom. That alone could lead to hacks based on other games.
