Best Final Fantasy game? (in your opinion)

See i don't know why 12 is so liked. am i missing something? while the gameplay is tolerable and sometimes fun, i find that the story is mediocre and the characters (aside from two of them) are just down right bland. i have been trying to play that game with all my might and no matter what, it was really difficult for me to enjoy fully. does the game pick up in story at all or does it stay the same through most of it?

Not everyone likes FF12. I loved it mostly from a gameplay perspective. The gambit system, the realistic way they designed the world maps, the large number of optional, tough challenges and the built in achievement system in the game appealed to me. FF12 was really built for hardcore FF players IMHO

Storywise, I felt FF12 was big on plot and light on character development. However, I enjoy how Basch's story plays out and I like Fran's backstory as well. Balthier wasn't that impressive to me storywise, but he's such a cool character. The series hasn't had a truly fantastic tale since FFX in my opinion(though tainted a bit by FF X 2's shitty excuse for a story). FF6 still tops them all story-wise though. That's old school Final Fantasy right there

FF12 is an offline MMO.

If I want to play an MMO I'll just download a free trial of Warcraft and re-hate it all over again.

My favorites are VI, VII, X, IX... I liked IV but it wasn't as awesome for me as it was for others I guess. V was great up until the old man leaves your party. After that I just got sick of it.

No love for Mystic Quest on here, guys? I'd say even tho it's a fairly easy game, there's quite a bit I liked about it. Great music, and I love how the battle sprites change appearance when they're badly injured.

XII I enjoyed playing up to a point, but eventually I just got sick of it. The story was too thin and boring, the characters... well, the story focused on the wrong characters, imo. (Ditch the kids, please.) I liked the battle engine, but it just felt like I was playing a long string of boss battles. This was also my complaint w/ FFVII-2 (whatever it's called, on the PSP). Too easy to get stuck doing missions and not advance the story (especially when the story is no great shakes).

X-2... the less said about it, the better.

XIII seems to be a take it or leave it kinda game. I've played it pretty far but I feel like it's shown me all it has to show me. I'm ready to just put it up and not go back to it. I dunno. In some ways, it's a fun game, and in others it's boring.

II & III I thought were ok. Not in my favorite list, but not bad games. But I only played them on the DS.

Tactics would be in my fav list if I considered it an FF game instead of an extension/dumbing down of Tactics Ogre. (Not that that's a bad thing, T.O. was a little too hardcore for me.) FFTA was pretty lame in comparison tho.

I'm one of the ones that thinks VIII was dreadful. Yeah, I hated Squall, but I also hated most of the storyline. the game felt like it was made without a storyboard (or that the storyboard was made whilst high and no one bothered to fix it later). Elements of the story just go nowhere (like zombie mayor, wtf?) or aren't fully explained. Some things defy logic entirely (Squall & Rinoa in space, for instance). A lot of what went on in the game was stupid and pointless. Yeah, there were things I liked. Triple Triad was a lot of fun. The graphics were pretty awesome for the time. Quistis was f'in hot. ... And that's about it.

So my favorite FF games. I've beaten 6-9 and 13 and I have played 4,10,12(about half way). So my list is:


1) FF VI
2) FF VIII
3) FF IX
4) FF XII
5) FF XIII (what? I liked it).

I loved 6. When I joined my first internet forum years ago my username was Locke. I liked almost every character, I loved the story, I loved the world, I loved the graphics, the steampunk, I loved Kefka and I LOVED the music. Oh the music. For a series known for it's excellent music, you can imagine how good its best music really is.

I liked 8. Half the cast was unbearable (Squal, Irvine and Selphie) but I liked the rest of them, plus the graphics were amazing, the world was very futuristic and I liked that, plus Seifer is the best rival the series ever had.

9 likewise had some really stupid characters (Quina, that red hair dude who joined your party even though it made absolutely no sense his doing so, and that knight freak) but it had one of the best and deeper characters the series ever had, Vivi

12 I liked the combat system, I liked that you are a part of the world, and that the world doesn't rotate around your party. Still haven't beat it though. Also I loved that the series finally has a character who is cool for grown ups (Balthier). Too bad the people at SE are idiots who, at the last minute, chose not to make Balthier the protagonist but instead chose Vaan. OUGH dear lord.


FF 13 has 3 excellent characters, who brake stereotypes set by the FF series (black character who swears. although he still is the only one who uses guns) and 2 great women characters (Lightning and Fang). now the rest. oh boy. Vannile is stupid fan service for those people who run around and say kawai instead of cute and say stuff like "I wish that anime was real"..... yes I know a girl who actually said that. Also Hope was a Joke. Same for Snow. Only good thing that came out of him, was when Lightning kept punching him. I laughed my ass off.

4 was ok but not really to my liking. Not enough Fantasy for my tastes.

I just did not like 10 (not even 1 likable character imo).

And 7. I just did not like 7. And the reason for that I believe is that it was overhyped like shit. I kept hearing/reading "FF 7 the best FF ever, FF7 it has the best villain ever (waaaaaaaay of an overstatement, specially for a guy who followed Kefka), it has the deepest story ever" and well.....I was not impressed. Also I had a problem with the cast. My favorite character was Red XIII. YES THE FREAKING DOG WAS MY FAVORITE CHARACTER in a cast of 9 people.



Come to think of it, other than FF VI, the series doesn't have any great villains. They tried to repeat Kefka trick with Sephiroth (show him to the player early on, show him do evil deeds) but he just never seamed so bad ass as Kefka.


Also I'm very happy that we Racketeers love FF VI so much. The best in the series by far. Here's to a 3DS remake. And if a Japanese FF6 branded 3DS comes out, I'm buying it. :D:D

Also, ooooooooooh super kawai ff6 chars. Did Strago die after the time skip? I don't remember. Also Celes looks like Locke's twin brother in that pic, and realm looks much more lady like than she should be.

That's kinda what I like about Jenova though, you know so little. It's just this malevolent otherworldly cosmic being. It's so lovecraftian.

I played 6 right after 7 and loved it just as much, if not more.
