Pandora (handheld linux gaming console/computer)

Post by Anapan »

I decided to check up on the progress of the Pandora handheld and found their video site. After watching PS1, Dreamcast, and dos games running smoothly I want one even more.

Too bad they're about $350 and currently sold-out...

The Dreamcast emulation didn't look that hot to me. Prince of Persia seemed to have a low framerate.

Other than that, I've wanted one of these, too... mostly cause the PSP can't do N64 emulation very well yet.

Full QWERTY keyboard, dual analog thumbsticks, and open source 3d hardware. So tempting, but so expensive.

But then, I've got a DS and PSP. And you can't really run Wine on that thing, since it's an ARM processor.

I still can't believe that no one has made a Saturn emulator for this thing yet.

The problem is the price point. You can get a netbook that'll do the same thing and more for the same price of the pandora.

I think that the Pandora was made by people who loved their work and really wanted to make everyone happy... but then they tried to do way too much with it. It can do too much, I think. People weren't looking for a netbook with analog sticks, but a portable gaming device. It's a nice gadget, but it's overpriced and ugly.

Sega Saturn emulators are much harder to program than regular emulators.

Even the windows version isn't %100.

They (saturn emulators) are not harder to program, there's just a whole boatload of chips in the thing compared to other systems. The DSP is pretty much undocumented though, so the argument has some validity at least.

Your second sentence seems fairly incomplete. Mentioning "the windows version" without actually having any object in there to refer to makes the sentence point to some illusive not to be named saturn emulator that is the only player in the field. The 100% in your sentence refering to that ever elusive perfection index that never gets quantified in any meaningfull terms.

Honestly, SSF (windows only) is the real player in the field. Yabause (cross platform) doesn't come close. Most of the games they list as playable have serious display issues. I'd really love for Yabause to get better, open source emulators are very important. But for now, if you can run SSF don't bother with Yabause.
