My TV's inputs frustrate and confuse me!

OK so, I have a HD CRT TV. On the back of it, there are two sets of Red/Blue/Green inputs. One is labeled component one and the other is labeled component 2. Also on the back is a Yellow/White/Red output (which is very convenient, I must say). Then there is a Yellow/White/Red input labeled AV1. But then, there is two sets of just Red/White (audio). One is labeled AV2 and one is labeled AV3. On the front of the TV, there is a yellow port, a white port, a red port, and an S-Video port. All of these are also labeled AV1.

When you turn on the TV, there are these options: AV1, AV2, AV3, Component 1, Component 2, and S Video.

If you have something plugged into AV1 on the back of the TV, and you plug something into AV1 on the front of the TV, whatever is plugged into the back of the TV is gets overridden, even if there is no signal going into the front port. I kinda understand why they did this, it's so you can have your permanent setup in the back, and override it when you plug in stuff like Plug n' play games in the front. But why couldn't they just make it a completely different section? Frustrating.

But then, the S Video is also on the front and there is not one on the back. Now, I thought S Video requires a seperate audio input. Where am I suppose to plug in the audio? Am I suppose to plug it into the front AV1 audio ports? Wouldn't that override the back audio ports, rendering them useless. Does that mean you have to choose between S Video and AV? I don't have anything to test this with, so I'm very confused!

Also, there are two sets of audio inputs on the back. One AV2 and one AV3. I have no idea why they couldn't have added video to these.

But then, there is two component inputs. Doesn't component require separate audio inputs, too? Where should I plug those in at? The answer seems to be AV2 and AV3, but then why would they have their own section when you turn on the TV? Is it just in case you want to listen to the audio of the DVD, but not the video? What the heck. I don't have anything to test this with so, again, I'm very confused.

Yeah, you've got it. Just use the AV1 audio inputs on the front for the audio and the AV2/AV3 audio inputs on the back for the component.

Remember man, check your manual or download a copy of it from your TV manufacturer's site, because without a model number or a picture we can't really give you any form of solid answer.

S-Video and Yellow Composite are different signals. Agree the front connections override the back ones. Strange there is no S-Video offered in the back. You could run Audio, S-Video and Composite from the front to a switch box. The "A" switch could be S-Video N64 and "B" switch could be Genesis composite for example. Both should work this way.

The labeling is confusing, considering what seems no dedicated video connections for AV2 and AV3 or dedicated audio for Component 1 or 2. Does seem the AV2 and AV3 correlate with the two component inputs.

Once I get your TV info, I can look up the specs on it.

The thing is, if I plug in any cable to the front AV ports, it will override the corresponding port on the back. So if I plug in a left audio cable, the back left audio will be overridden. The worst part is, even if the other end of the cable isn't even plugged into anything, it will still be overridden, which makes no sense.

The AV2 and AV3 are next to the Components, so it looks like it would match up, but I'm more boggled by the fact that they have their own "channel" on the TV.

Probably just penny pinching on the number of connectors they have to add to the board.
