Getting an SNES

Post by AgentCupcakes »

Well I just ordered an SNES from 8bit and Ive been trying to figure out which games I want to get so far here is the list:

Super Mario World
LOZ Link to the Past
Super Metroid
Chrono Trigger
Earthbound
Harvest Moon
Final Fantasy II
Final Fantasy III
Star Fox
Super Punch-Out!!
Super Mario RPG
Lufia II

I know that getting these games will be crazy expensive so I'd like to know about cheap fun games to get any help would be great :D

Whooo! I hope you have deep pockets, friend!

I'd shoot for side scrollers and 2D Fighters and lose the RPG's.

Two reasons for this:

A) In general, they are a lot cheaper these days. You can pick up Megaman X or a copy of Street Fighter II Turbo for under $10

B) SNES batteries aren't getting any younger and most (if not all) are already past their projected lifespans. Now, if you don't have any problem replacing them yourself (it's not that hard, I understand) just disregard this point.

Some favorite, less high profile games of mine:

Zombies ate my Neighbors
Cybernator
Ranma 1/2: Hard Battle
Super Smash TV
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

I'd start with

Super Mario World
LOZ Link to the Past
Final Fantasy II
Star Fox
Super Punch-Out!!
F-zero
Gradius 3
Donkey kong country 2

and some fighters

Lufia2, Super mario rpg and Earthbound, Harvest moon, Chrono trigger, FF3 are a bit too expensive to buy when starting a collection.

Ok, I'll give you a list with some rough prices of games that I like that I figure you might want to check out. I do have to ask what genres you're interested in, because some of what I may recommend you may not be interested in whatsoever, and the information will help future responses. But here's a rough list of titles I suggest you check out, and I've included a few RPGs that are lower in price than folks realize.

It should be noted the prices come from the Used prices currently listed on Video Game Price Charts, and are subject to change.

ActRaiser: $9.50
ActRaiser 2: $8.40
Brain Lord: $3.95
Breath of Fire: $12.00
Contra III The Alien Wars: $18.98
Cybernator: $2.90
Donkey Kong Country: $9.71
Donkey Kong Country 2: $10.42
F-Zero: $1.73
Illusion of Gaia: $8.99
Kendo Rage: $4.27
Killer Instinct: $5.99
King Of Dragons: $11.84
Legend of Mystical Ninja: $7.53
Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past: $14.09
Lost Vikings: $13.49
Magic Sword: $4.22
Mario Paint: $0.75 (does not include cost of SNES Mouse)
Marvel Super Heroes in War of the Gems: $11.87
Mega Man X: $11.35
Mortal Kombat 2: $3.50
Peace Keepers: $8.58
Paladin's Quest: $13.81
Power Rangers Fighting Edition: $7.36
Secret of Evermore: $14.73
Shadowrun: $19.95
Soldier of Fortune: $4.99
Spiderman: Maximum Carnage: $6.88
StarFox: $6.12
Street Fighter Alpha 2: $8.50
Street Fighter 2 Turbo: $3.47
Super Bomberman: $15.09
Super Castlevania IV: $16.95
Super Mario All Stars: $13.99
Super Mario Kart: $14.48
Super Mario World: $6.68
Super Mario World 2 Yoshi's Island: $16.85
Super Punch-Out: $12.60
Super Smash TV: $9.99
Super Street Fighter 2: $7.60
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV Turtles in Time: $16.00
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Tournament Fighters: $7.01
UN Squadron: $6.81
WeaponLord: $2.33
X-Men Mutant Apocalypse: $7.38
Zombies Ate My Neighbors: $15.25

Slightly more expensive, but not over $30:

Breath of Fire II: $26.90
Kirby Super Star: $23.99
Knights of the Round: $20.44
Lufia: $22.65
Ninja Warriors: $26.01
Pocky & Rocky: $21.93
Secret of Mana: $26.47
Sunset Riders: $22.00
Super Mario All Stars and Super Mario World: $20.48
Super Mario RPG: $28.75
Super Metroid: $22.12
Uncharted Waters: $21.74

Also, changing SNES batteries isn't as difficult as you might think, though it would be a better idea to try doing it on cheaper games the first few times. You don't want to pick up a copy of EarthBound, only to ruin it by botching the battery.

Rock and Roll Racing and NBA Jam are two of my favorite SNES games and you can probably get both for under $10, under 5 if you really look.

If you want to go for imports that are import friendly and sub $20:
Super Bomberman 3-5 (5 will run you $20+ most places though)
Battle Tetris Gaiden
Battle Cross
Mario Picross
