Got a new TV a couple days ago - good choice?
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Panasonic+- ... Id=9783676
The one thing I don't like much is the lack of inputs - I will have to buy a component switch (and possible something for multiple VGA as well).
I know there's no svideo, but I have a sony trinitron I would do all of my pre ps2 era gaming on. I guess I don't notice much wrong, but that's also because I spent money on it and want it to be good.
Anyone have any opinions on this set? Did I make a good choice?

Too bad about no S-Video input. Great that you have VGA input, maybe a better trade off?
Looked up your manual, a digital copy for you Merry Ghristmas:

Looks like regular VGA is supported, a chance Dreamcast 640x480 VGA mode might work.
Hey, a handy chart!

Panasonic make an excellent LCD ,which is odd for a company that is still very much an advocate for plasma technology. Not only do they have a great image, but they also have excellent reliability. I sell Panasonic at the store I work at and I can't remember ever seeing a single Panasonic LCD fail in the 4 years I've worked there.

Are the plasmas good for gaming. I'm afraid of buying an LCD because of that. Also I want something that doesn't make low res look like something that's melting. (bad scaling) I rather have crisp pixels even if mario is 1/4 the screen.Droid party wrote:Panasonic make an excellent LCD ,which is odd for a company that is still very much an advocate for plasma technology. The current plasmas that Panasonic makes are the only plasmas left on the market and they are amazing. Those of you saying "Well what about those Samsung and JVC plasmas I see?" In all actuality they're using Panasonic's screens as Panasonic is the only company left manufacturing the actual plasma display panels themselves. Plus in the last five years or so plasmas have come a long long way from their blurry awful cousins from the early 2000's.
Unlike before now you only have to worry about the first 100 or so hours of use to cause any true burn in from still images. Otherwise it takes several days to even leave a significant mark on screen that can then be easily removed by the white bar screen fixer mode on the TV. Plus, thanks to the advancements in the hardware driving the panel itself you get an amazing 600hz image and the best black levels you've ever seen on a flat screen aside from Pioneer's revered Elite series Plasmas that were discontinued last year.
Anyway, as far as flat screens come, go plasma and go Panasonic.
Also, no matter what and no matter how the internal upscaler in every single HDTV be it plasma, LCD or even CRT's S.U.C.K.S. and will never make a 480i signal even barely resemble what you can see from when playing with a separate upconversion box such as the XRGB, on an emulator, or on the native resolution of an SDTV.
480p, 720p and 180i/p signals will look fantastic though as scaling and up/down converting progressive formats is incredibly simple and efficient when compared to 480i.

Truth! I use a plasma for my current gen consoles and have no issue with burn in. Even if I'm playing for hours with a static image like a tacho or life bar on the screen I still have no problem that can't be fixed by simply changing the channel for a few minutes. Couple that with better motion handling and better black levels means I'd play on nothing else.Mod_Man_Extreme wrote:Unlike before now you only have to worry about the first 100 or so hours of use to cause any true burn in from still images. Re: Got a new TV a couple days ago - good choice?
Panasonic G10 is the plasma I own and am pretty happy with it. The upscaler is about as good as you will get without an external and has one of the lowest amounts of input lag i've seen on a HDTV. Only thing that sucks about the plasma is over time the blacks will get worse. The reason this happens is that over certain time periods voltage needs to be raised to keep the phosphors to keep lighting up. Consequently, panasonic's algorithm is messed up and they don't want to admit it and gives too much voltage.
Also it does have problems with 240p content (Disgaea on PS2 and Saturn/Genesis/ anything through RGB). But that can be solved with a transcoder.
I soon plan to buy a DVDO Edge to play all my consoles in RGB goodness and perfect 240p.

Tv's have gotten so cheap since I bought my 720p 46" Sony Rear Projection LCD for $1450 4 years ago. I'm still happy with it, but it's amazing what's out there. I think it's really hard to go wrong with any of the name brand tvs that are out there. Best Buy had a 65" Panasonic Plasma for $2100!

How is the temperature radiating on the LEDs?

60Hz seems like a pretty poor refresh rate.
