Help me copy my Gameboy catridges

Post by k.vlaros »

I'd appreciate it if someone could give me a suggestion for where I can buy a device to copy my Gameboy, Gameboy Color and Gameboy Advance cartridges to my computer. I'm not that familiar with the 'ROM scene' and it took a bit of guts just for me to order an EZ Flash IV for the GBA. Now, I keep running in to dead ends trying to find a ROM copying peripheral. The suggested locations are either out of stock or look extremely "shady". Ebay had none last I searched (or I don't know what to search for- advice appreciated).

So if anyone can give me a link to a known source in stock, I'd be grateful. Or you could PM me if you have one of these gizmos to sell. My laptop docking station has a parallel port in addition to USB, incidentally.

Also, I'm a bit of a goody two shoes. Am I correct to think I'm not breaking any laws to make a personal copy of a game I physically own?

Thank you. :D

I think dealextreme used to sell one of these things, but they seem to be sold out. As far as the legality thing, you're talking about a pretty gray area. Some people are going to claim that they can prove that it's perfectly legal, others will tell you the opposite. As far as I know, none of the RacketBoy forum members are actually lawyers.

Who gives a shit?

They're your games. Do whatever you want with them. Anyone who says otherwise is just looking for a fight or play devil's advocate. NO ONE cares what you do with old games.

Try here, he`s a trustworthy seller http://www.consolegoods.co.uk/

It uses parallel though so that could be a problem if you don`t have a port

another one is the Smartboy http://smartboy.ugu.pl/ which uses usb but is slow shipping and only handles GB/GBC

See 17 U.S.C. 117 for the federal law regarding the creation and use of copied computer programs:

Making of additional copy or adaptation by owner of copy. Notwithstanding the provisions of section 106 [17 USC 106], it is not an infringement for the owner of a copy of a computer program to make or authorize the making of another copy or adaptation of that computer program provided . . . (2) that such new copy or adaptation is for archival purposes only and that all archival copies are destroyed in the event that continued possession of the computer program should cease to be rightful.

Have a DS/DSL? I'm pretty sure there's an app that will dump games over Wifi. I know you can do it for NDS roms, not sure if it supports GBA, but it's worth checking if you have one.

Love the first link. I've emailed the proprietor. Thanks a bunch- exactly what I was looking for!

And thanks prfsnl for the copy/paste. I've surely seen that before because it is familiar. But heck, I suppose Nintendo probably doesn't give two shakes about .GB files any longer.

I decided to do some naughty Googling and found a website... well between you and me it has almost every one of my non-import carts and many of the imports as well. Now I'm wondering if it is 'OK' to use someone else's rip of game's I own. Well, I'll probably order the perhiperal anyhow in the case that I want to play Nectaris (oh wait, the site has that one), X (wait... it has that too), or Guru Logic Champ (stumped it!). Wow, what a site.
