seeking an alternative to the standard n64 controller

Post by floatingyeti »

i love nintendo and own nes, snes, n64, and gc. but have never been able to enjoy the n64 because of its uncomfortable and poorly designed controller. i've tried and tried to get used to the darn controller but time after time it has prevented me from taking the time to really play the system. the only times i had a truely enjoyable n64 experience was with emulation on my pc using a gamepad. i beat mario64 and rouge squadron and loved every second of it.

lately i have been absolutely obsessed with retrogaming and have amassed a sizeable n64 collection. there are so many games i want to play but i keep through down my controller in frustration. i can't easy access all the buttons with out constantly readjusting my grip. the joystick drives me crazy, my thumb can never stay centered on the darn thing and so often my thumb will slide completely off. i never have had a problem with other joy based controllers.

Is there an alternative? my favorite controller ever is the ps2's. is it possible to find a third party n64 controller designed like ps2? or even a converter so you can use a gc controller. there has to be something.

There is a thirdparty controller that resembles the gamecube controller, I just cant find its name or it on ebay. However when going thirdparty for the n64 you know the controller will be of a lower quality right? Ive used a good chunk of the thirdparty N64 controllers and while the stick and trigger was fine, the face buttons were rubbish. I guess with some tinkering you could make it something awesome.

If I do find the controller I will shoot you a link

They were fairly common back in the day, try flea markets, or get the one from goodwill with a cord from a busted controller if you can solder, its only 3 or 4 wirers as far as I can remember
