Forgive me if there is already a topic for this. I recall discussions of specific compilations, but not compilations in general.
There seem to be a lot of compilations out there, from Super Mario AllStars on the SNES to the Sega Smash Packs on the Dreamcast to tons of arcade anthologies on the PS2. However, the quality of these seem to vary greatly. Super Mario AllStars is generally well-regarded, though I don't believe there is a option to play with original graphics. The Dreamcast Sega Smash Packs are widely hated for the low quality of the audio. I recall someone on the board complaining about terrible controls on one of the Metal Slug compilations.
So, which ones out there come closest to recreating the experience of playing the games on the original hardware? Is playing Mega Man on a Gamecube or PS2 controller tolerable? Does Golden Axe play correctly in any of the billion and a half collections Sega has put it in? Do they properly account for the goofy sprite flicker tricks used in Atari 2600 games?
Thus far, I think that the only compilation that I own is the Sega Smash Pack for the Gameboy Advance. Graphics seem to be represented accurately, though the screen is understandably cropped. I cannot comment on sound quality, but Golden Axe does not quite play correctly. The player cannot hit more than one enemy with an attack.
Good compilations?

Re: Good compilations?
My favorite compilations:
King of Fighters Collection
Street Fighter Alpha Anthology
Megaman Anniversary
Legend of Zelda Collectors Disc
Sonic Mega Collection Plus
Those compilations have all provided me with endless hours of fun and feel as near to the original games as they could be.

Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?
Re: Good compilations?
The Megaman Anniversary collection is considered to be better on the PS2 than the Gamecube because of an odd button configuration on the Gamecube that can't be modified.
The Capcom Classics collections are great. I have both of those. Street Fighter Anniversary Collection and Street Fighter Alpha Anthology are also good. It seems Capcom does this well for the most part.
SNK doesn't always do so hot, though I have the Metal Slug 4 & 5 release (different from Metal Slug Anthology, which has mixed reviews), and it was ported pretty much perfectly.
The Ninja Gaiden trilogy on SNES was another good one, like Mario Allstars.

I don't know if Street Fighter Anniversary will fit the bill for what OP was looking for. Street Fighter III: Third Strike is emulated nicely but neither of the other iterations were included. Hyper Street Fighter II is a little wonky in terms of balance and doesn't really replace having the actual SFII iterations. Also the lack of the original Street Fighter makes the 'Anniversary' moniker sketchy at best.J T wrote:Street Fighter Anniversary Collection and Street Fighter Alpha Anthology are also good. That said, Street Fighter Alpha Anthology IS pretty golden in all regards.

As for the metal slug collection the Wii version suffers from a terrible control scheme no matter which set up chosen and many graphical and sound glitches. The ps2 version which came out later is arcade perfect as far as I'm concerned and plays perfect with my hori stick.

Second these individual Metal Slugs, the disc pair for the PS2. I have also heard mixed reactions of the anthology, the individual 4 and 5 seem to work fine. Anyone have both anthology 4-5 and the individual 4-5 that can offer a comparison?J T wrote:TSNK doesn't always do so hot, though I have the Metal Slug 4 & 5 release (different from Metal Slug Anthology, which has mixed reviews), and it was ported pretty much perfectly.

Actually, the Ninja Gaiden Trilogy is generally frowned on by NG fans. The only reason it's considered special by a lot of SNES fans is because of the rarity of the cart.
If you don't mind some load times and being stuck with a maximum of two players for co-op, the Dungeons and Dragons Collection on the Saturn is excellent. It's really the only way to play it outside of emulation or owning the arcade cabs. Import only though, and a bit rare

I enjoyed the SNK collection on the PS2, and Capcom Classics and Sega Smashpack are well made ofr the GBA.
