Streets of Rage 4 HD - Demo is out!
Re: Streets of Rage 4 HD - Demo is out!
I'm fed up with this HD fad, anyday now I am expecting an HD suffix to the regular toast I get from the bakery.
SorR is certainly taking its sweet time (no blog posts since February)

Does anyone else just not enjoy the feel of all these BoR mods?
I can't quite place what's off but they all just feel sort of crooked...

I don't know about the "feel" exactly, but I sure don't enjoy them as much as I do the original SoR games. No vaulting, no B+C backward attack... they're so shallow in comparison, although I suppose that's to be expected from a fan-created engine. Really though, simply not being able to vault over your opponent for a suplex totally screws things up for me. It just doesn't feel like SoR without that ability.AwesomeMonstar wrote:Does anyone else just not enjoy the feel of all these BoR mods?

While I agree the HD fad is annoying at times, games like this are the perfect example of when to use the HD prefix. It lets people know they have new graphics compared to the 100's of BOR's mods that use the stock graphics.Pulsar_t wrote:I'm fed up with this HD fad, anyday now I am expecting an HD suffix to the regular toast I get from the bakery.SorR is certainly taking its sweet time (no blog posts since February)

Lack of moves and an overall feeling of been there, done that have me left dissapointed with some of the BOR games I've played, but I think the7k mentioned a revamp of Data East's Nightslashers that he liked in another thread. I found a video, it looks cool. Though after watching the vid I'm concerned it might be too easy a game. Looks more fun that this SOR4 game thoughAssman wrote:I don't know about the "feel" exactly, but I sure don't enjoy them as much as I do the original SoR games. Anything that you feel is wrong with an OpenBOR mod is the fault of the creator. The engine is EXTREMELY flexible.
Check out any of BonusJZ's (Nightslashers X) or Mr. Q's (Final Fight Apocalypse 2nd Edition) to see what happens when someone takes the time to make it right. FFA2E is even a pretty basic, early mod, and yet it manages to feel like Final Fight very well.
I've seen several Shmups made with OpenBOR. I've seen Phantasy Star made with OpenBOR. I've seen Castlevania made with OpenBOR. Heck, someone has reportedly even made Tetris. I'm pretty sure OpenBOR can handle anything 2D... It just comes down to who has the tools.
I haven't played this mod yet, but I can assure you - anything that was done in SOR COULD have been done. Vaulting, back+BC attacks, whatever. Hell, I'm making a Darkstalkers mod right now, and I've made no concessions other than reducing the number of attack buttons from 6 to 4.
Also, as for Nightslashers X being 'easy'... heh, no. I still haven't beaten it. I'm kinda thinking about decompiling the game so that I can set it to start me off with 99 lives or something. Once you first confront Dracula, it starts getting hard. Once you defeat Dracula, it starts getting brutal.

While I'd generally agree with you, this particular game has had some pretty serious effort put into redesigning a lot of the graphics while still maintaining a sense of connection to the original.Pulsar_t wrote:I'm fed up with this HD fad
This is clearly more than just a Photoshop or Scale4x upscaling.

Where's a good place to download Nightslashers X? I'm looking to play it on the PSP. And since MAME still has very little compatibility on the PSP last I heard, I probably won't be playing the original Nightslashers on it any time soon. Might as well check out Nightslashers X. And should I be using BOR or that new open BOR I've heard about?the7k wrote:Anything that you feel is wrong with an OpenBOR mod is the fault of the creator. The engine is EXTREMELY flexible.

BOR isn't going to work. It's extremely basic (pretty much every game plays the same, and there's nothing you can really do about it either) and has basically not even supported anymore - the original devs ditching it to work on Rush Rush Rally and Age of the Beast. OpenBOR is still supported, however. It's also the only way you can play games like Nightslashers X.Gamerforlife wrote: Where's a good place to download Nightslashers X? If you want to get OpenBOR and/or Nightslashers X, you'll have to sign up for an account at lavalit.com. As far as I know, everything OpenBOR related happens there - it's all extremely centralized.
