Bah. All of you just aren't looking in the right places. Anime, just like Video Games, Hollywood Movies, Books and everything else, is going to be 95% crap - but there's always going to be something worth spending your time on. The answer to that is different for everyone, though.Octopod wrote:Flake wrote:Amen. I used to like Japanimation but that was the stuff from the 70's and 80's. I'd want to move on from voicing characters who all look exactly the same too.
Agreed.

I've always found it odd that a fascination with lolitas is a normal thing over there. In America, we'd call that pedophilia. Someone just recently was talking about feeling uncomfortable playing Deathsmiles because of that. There's a lot about Japan I don't understandHatta wrote:I completely agree. Seems like we Americans have no problem showing gruesome violence to our kids, but show a bit of tit and people freak out. WTF.Breetai wrote:Americans are pretty fucked up. Still, tentacle rape and used panty vending machines. That's just odd.

Seriously? You don't think the same exact thing happens in America?Gamerforlife wrote: I've always found it odd that a fascination with lolitas is a normal thing over there. You seem to have forgotten Britney Spears. And Hillary Duff. And Miley Cyrus. And the Olsen Twins. And... well, I think I've made the point.

You people do realize that most of the japanese population finds all that stuff pretty weird and revolting too, right? Otaku are considered huge social outcasts there, and the word is a borderline insult that carries a lot more weight than "nerd" or something here does.
Anime has been in a big quality slump for the past decade or so. I think its because the industry became a little bit too aware of its own audience.

It's strangely comforting to know that my lack of interest in anime for the past couple years now is not about me, but that anime in general kind of sucks now. I still love the old classic stuff. Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Tenchi, Record of Lodoss War,Grave of the Fireflies, Ranma, Slayers,Ah My Goddess,Love Hina,Princess Mononoke, Rurouni Kenshin, etc.AppleQueso wrote:You people do realize that most of the japanese population finds all that stuff pretty weird and revolting too, right? There's still good stuff. The ones you named are really good, though the Ranma anime hit a hard slump and Love Hina was never good. This Spring season was surprisingly good - usually there's only one or two decent series per season, but you had 6 or so, not including ones continuing from Winter.Gamerforlife wrote:It's strangely comforting to know that my lack of interest in anime for the past couple years now is not about me, but that anime in general kind of sucks now. IMO this is just a slump. After Evangelion there was a flux of mecha series, and series all trying to out-angst Evangelion, so the flux of moe bullcrap is just a trend that will pass until the next truly groundbreaking thing pops up. In the meantime, am I kawaii? uguu~

Meh, I can agree that the Japanese are weird, but I'm sure if Justin Beiber was to start playing in a country band we will see pictures of little tweens burning their Hanna Montana bra's.

Re: DEAR LORD Japanese nerds are freaks
There's a surprising amount of xenophobic sentiment being aired out on this thread, and I think the OP, ZeroAX, set the tone with that subject line and liberal use of the word "stupid."
The crux of this is a pattern not at all restricted to the Japanese: people who are stupid enough to idolize somebody will get mind-bogglingly enraged when it turns out that their idol isn't who they thought he/she was.
How is this any different from what happened with Tiger Woods? The guy was a great golfer, and people loved his clean-cut family guy image, which Woods took to the bank with all of those rich endorsements. Then it became publicly known that he has a complete inability to keep his pants up, and those same idiots who idolized him felt betrayed because the man didn't match the image they bought into.
Someone else mentioned LeBron James, and that comparison is apropos as well: Cavs fans were burning his jersey on national TV because the man had been bandying the word "loyalty" all throughout the free agency period but didn't sign with his home team.
TL;DR: there are idiots of all colors, creeds, and ethnicities that do stupid shit like this.
