Know any good reading materials on evolution, astrophysics..

Post by Dylan »

Anyone know any good books about evolution, counter-evolution, astrophysics, or psychology? I'm looking into these subjects and I'm hoping some members of this board have had good experiences with books on these matters. Right now I'm probably looking for more introductory texts, as I haven't extensively researched a lot of these topics (and haven't graduated highschool yet, so I don't have any college classes under my belt). Anyone have suggestions?

Try Max Born's book on Relativity. He thoroughly covers special relativity with only High School math. He lays a really good groundwork too, and he doesn't skimp on discussing general relativity either. Read through that book and you'll be very well prepared for first semester college physics. You'll probably understand most of it better going in than your classmates will understand going out.

As for other fields, I always enjoyed just grabbing text books and working through them. Their sole purpose is to educate, and they're usually pretty good at the job.

For evolution I would recommend On the Origin of Species by Charles Darwin sense it pretty much stared the idea of modern evolution. I'm not while versed of astrophysics so I don't really know what to recommend.

Edit: I have but never read Phantoms in the Brain by V.S. Ramachandran I saw a show on sicince or discovery channel based on the book and went out and got the books a few days later. It's more about neuroscience than psychology but if you want to learn how the human minds works I heard nothing but good reviews. Sample of one case in the book "In one experiment, stroking an amputee's cheek produces sensations in his "phantom limb" because the part of the brain's map that once related to the lost limb has "invaded" the adjacent brain area that relates to the cheek."

Evolution:
The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins for evolution
Origin of Species has already been mentioned
A Breif History of Time by Stephen Hawking for evolution

Earth's Catastrophic Past by Andrew Snelling for counter evolution
Design and Origins in Astronomy (multiple authors), vol. 1 & 2 for anti-evolution
Radioisotopes and the Age of the Earth (multiple authors), Vol. 1 & 2 for anti-evolution

Astrophysics... I have no idea.

Psychology; what area of Psychology are you interested in? This is an amazingly good and professional (it's government) website dealing with psychological issues and diagosis'; http://www.nimh.nih.gov/index.shtml.

Personally, I work in the social/psycholoty field (with people having mental disorders and addictions; concurrent issues) and have a passing interest in the evolution/creation debate.

...two of those have nothing to do with evolution and the one that does is outdated by modern standards.

I take it your referring to On the origin of species as outdated. While that is true the fact that modern biology was formed mostly around that one book I think makes it a must read.

These were the first google results - lots of good stuff there (if you can get past the obvious humor/fiction stuff that pops up):

This is a list of some books on creation vs evolution.

This also might be interesting to you as well. This creationist goes around to different universities and debates science professors. They are very entertaining and interesting, and you will definitely get both sides of the argument in this format.

Correction: These are lists of books suggested BY a pro-creationism website, so I am sure they will have objective perspectives.

Creation science is a god damn oxymoron.
