First edition SNES with Mitsumi manufactured sound module

Post by gnusys »

Opened up a SNES found in the wild and saw this sound module.

This SNES also has the "rare" rubber feet.
Anyone know why Nintendo would put so much into the sound of the SNES?
Was it a reaction to the Genesis' crappy sound?
Anyone know anything more?

Never plugged an HDG model 1 Genesis into a nice sound system, huh? That thing can rock.

These SNES models aren't rare, I own two. Nintendo manufactured the audio chips on the SNES like this until 1993-1994.

Also, get yourself a real Genesis and you'll hear the difference. Early Model 1 consoles sound amazing while later Model 1's and most Model 2's until 1995 were crap thanks to a manufacturing defect in the audio circuit.
My Consoles:
Genesis - Nomad - SegaCD - GameGear - Sega Saturn - Dreamcast - NES - SNES - N64 - Gamecube - Wii - Playstation - PSone & LCD - PS2 - PS3 - Xbox - 3DS

This is certainly true. However, the Genesis could likely not pull off some of the SNES's more impressive soundtracks, things like DKC and really any Square game.

Actually.....

This sounds amazing. Not exactly true to the Genny's specs at all times, but close:

This man on the other hand knows how to create amazing stuff generated completely within the actual realistic sound limitations of the Genesis:

Super Metroid:

Axelay:

MegaMan X3 Intro Stage:

MegaManX3 Blast Hornet:

MegaManX3 Toxic Seahorse:

Sonic Advance 2:

Sonic 4:

The guy also did a ton of the music for Streets of Rage Remake too.

EDIT!: Also, this original track from another guy is amazing:

If you have a model 1 that says "High Definition Graphics" on it, that one has the best sound chip. This is a good resource to check with: http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7796

That is impressive, but you can tell the translation isn't totally perfect. It's almost like both consoles just trade off, though I believe at their higher points the sounds quality on the SNES is better. Admittedly, I grew up with an SNES, so it is likely that I'm biased.

Here's the list!

http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7796

Basically when it comes to Model 1's they're all fine except for the dreaded VA7. As for Model 2's they're almost all complete crap except for the 3/4 motherboard VA3 & VA4 revisions; and even then there are still sound issues with the console.

Yeah, I really love the other tracks made by Gecko Yamori though. That man really knows how to make the YM2612 work.

How do you go about making Genesis music on a PC?
