Everyone would love having an Arcade original of all their favorites. Realistically, how many really have the money and space for such an endeavor. Yes, MAME is a practical way to enjoy the bygone Arcades.

An aspect of Mame, getting all the variants of say GALAXIAN such as GALAXIAN X with its quick shoot mode.

Mentioned earlier, RAIDEN is great! The Japanese anime sound effects when the boss crawler appears.

Gradius III
What the hell? NO

Pick something easy first like the 194X series.
Agreed. If you want to start out in the Gradius series, try the original Gradius, Gradius Gaiden (a bit tough, but still super fun), Parodius Da! or Salamander/Life Force. They are MUCH friendlier for someone new to the genre.

MAME is pretty much endless for shmups. Ill have to check out Raine, since Ive never heard of it. Ive got a little over 8,000 MAME roms with about 7200 or so that actually work. Some take a trackball which I dont have but I may get one. Im currenlty working on a bartop project which will take me awhile, since its my first.

Like someone mentioned earlier, Guwange is really good on MAME. Just check out Youtube and do a search on MAME shmups and take a look at some people's MAME setups. Theres alot of info out there.

Since this topic keeps getting bumped (for good reason), I thought I should mention this here. There's a hack of MAME .137 that removes a frame of lag (buffering) from MAME for most of the shmups you'd want to play. Apparently it causes a bit of desynching between scrolling sprites and scrolling backgrounds, but I haven't seen any problems. Gameplay is much improved! The patches even compile cleanly on Linux. Check it out here.
