Adventure games weren't exactly huge in the 8/16-bit console world. They were far more prevalent on computers. But if we can ignore the computer realm for a moment and focus on the consoles, there are actually a fair number of top-notch adventures (many of them computer ports, surprise, surprise). I saw someone talking about that on a youtube video and he said it was awesome. There's an SNES one too but it's a completely different game
