Need help finding a fun game to play...

Post by jukappa »

Hey everyone I need help with some new game to play to kill some time. My xbox 360 is dead because well, that's what they do... So I have a ps2, ps1, gamecube and xbox to play games on. Now I want to find a game that is somewhat similar to like mega man legends. In the sense that you can upgrade/level up/get stronger, has a story, and has real time fighting, not turn based. Now I know there is plenty out there of these "ARPG's" But what are some good ones?

There is a couple I found intriguing but I know nothing about them other than what i have read online, so any positive or negative feedback on these would be appreciated.

Steambot Chronicles

Magic Pengel: The Quest for Color

Samurai Legend Musashi

Tales of Symphonia for the Gamecube is one of the best ARPGs money can buy. I wrote a review of it here: http://isitaboutmygamecube.blogspot.com/2010/07/review-tales-of-symphonia.html

However, you seem to be more comfortable with PS2 ARPGs, so Tales of the Abyss is just as good.

Oh wow that sounds like a good game... I could get my roomates to play together in an adventure and level up like in gauntlet and hunter the reckoning...but the game would actually be good lol. I will definitely check this out, thanks for the suggestion.

I played it through in multiplayer mode, and it was a total blast. You're right; it would be a perfect RPG for a couple of roommates to play.

I read that when your not fighting all the other players don't do anything... Only player one controls stuff out of combat. Wouldn't there be moments of long non-battling parts of the game that would just be lame for everyone else?

Magic Pengel's creation mode thing is really neat, but the gameplay outside of that is incredibly boring and shallow.

Samurai Legend Musashi is a terrible sequel to a great psx game. If you're gonna play a Musashi game, play the original Brave Fencer Musashi.

There are enough battles going on to keep things interesting. Usually, when you're not in an area where battles will take place, you will be in an area with a cutscene, in which you will be listening to the story. Also, every now and then, you will come across a puzzle in a dungeon, in which everyone can help try and figure it out. Also, if worse comes to worse, you can pass the first controller around to different people, taking turns. Or, if you all just have THAT short of an attention span [ ], then you can have everyone bring something along to pass intermediate time. The only times when you don't have a full party of characters is either when you're just starting out [which is fixed soon; you get a 4-player party before the first dungeon], and very brief moments in the story.

If you're gonna play a Musashi game, mute the TV. The voice acting is a total disaster.

I've heard far worse than Brave Fencer

Besides, from what I've heard from Symphonia, it's voice acting isn't exactly oscar quality either...

God Hand (PS2) isn't an ARPG but you do gain new fighting moves throughout the game. It has an awesome story, real time awesome fighting, and as a bonus it will be the only game you'll ever need to play... ever. :)

Caveat: All other games after God Hand will never be as good. But who cares when you have the best game ever made anyways?

Well, it's no Persona 4, but it's good enough.
