Pelican G3 - Analog Troubles

Post by T2Geeky »

Well, simply put... it doesn't work right. Left and right work just as intended, but up and down don't work at all. This is not for the yellow stick. If anyone knows of a fix, it would be greatly appreciated!

Analog sticks use 2 potentiometers (or wheels for N64 sticks) on the analog sticks. Either a solder joint where the up/down one connects to the board is bad or the actual bit inside is toast. You could try touching up the solder joints, but otherwise it's probably going to need the whole stick assembly replaced.

Ok, I'll give touching up the solder. If that doesn't fix it, I'll just get a new one, they're fairly inexpensive.

The rest might be good for parts.

A usual fail or wear area also may be in the connector cable at the plug or base of controller.
Maybe test Multimeter each pin of the controller port connector to the controller internal PCB.

While you have the controller apart see if the potentiometers actually swivel when you move the stick, a sheared pin maybe.

If everything else is working except up and down on one analog stick it won't be a pin or one of the cable connections since at that point it's a coded signal instead of individual wires like an old Atari 2600 controller. The problem will be either the up/down potentiometer (most likely), something in the encoder chip (least likely since everything else works), or a connection in between.

Good point. Silly me, only 3 contacts at the controller plug.
Perhaps that potentiometer not swiveling, a sheared mechanical pin under the stick?
