It's a pretty damn under appreciated job. Speaking as a sysadmin, it's pretty typical to be considered a department that's nothing more than a huge sinkhole of money, and most businesses seem to loathe needing to pay for staff and resources to keep their critical business systems functioning.

Sysadmin Day is a nice way to recognise those who keep critical infrastructure functioning so the rest of the world can keep doing what it does day to day.

Our department took a half day off, and went for a nice piss up. We had to pay our own way of course ($200 per person restaurants are reserved for "real staff" - sysadmins have to pay for their own beer), but at least they let us out of the building for once (given that most of us work 60+ hours per week).

I'm sure I'll get back to work on Monday though with a long list of complaints about how we all walked out, and the business ground to a halt without us. Typically that's what has happened in years gone by.

I'm not trying to belittle the job but there are about a million under appreciated jobs and many of them have a much more noble cause with less monetary compensation. There just aren't enough days in the year for everyone to have a day. Where does the line get drawn?
I'm glad you enjoyed it and everything, it just seems a little ludicrous.

BTW: Tomorrow is Manager of the frozen section of the market day!
