I think my DC might have died!

Post by jimmy2x2x »

I just plugged it in for a session and was greeted with a black screen, but with audio.

I only have 1 scart cable at the moment, so Im not really sure how to troubleshoot this, any ideas?

Let's gather around and have a moment of silence.

Does the drive spin at all? Another possibility is faulty scart cable. Try swapping out the cable with a new one. Lastly, it might be a grounding issue. Assess the pins for bending or corrosion.

Worst case scenario, it's toast - buy the one on my list

I'm willing to bet that's your SCART cable. I'm guessing the DC is outputing pure RGB through the cable and your TV isn't in that mode. Sometimes those TV's have an RGB button you can press or you can wire a battery into your SCART cable. Here is a thread from SHMUPS that should help you out:

Again, this console is probably fine.

No need for a eulogy gents. :)

Maybe try a different type video cable say composite to verify.
If disc doesn't spin maybe the drive door not hitting closed switch.

OK Ive managed to get hold of an RF cable, the dreamcast is still alive, so it looks like the scart cable thats at fault. I know the cable used to work on the TV I'm using it on now, so unless something has fried the RGB output inside the console, a replacement cable should solve it.

The cables are so expensive, I might see if I can pick up a VGA box instead - always wanted to try one out!
