Whatever you do don't play Robo Aleste for Sega CD, even on "Easy" this game will destroy you and the confidence you once had in your gaming abilities. But it's really fun, too!
But do try Darius Gaiden, it's one of the easier to find shmups for Saturn. It's got really unique level designs and aquatic themed bosses. Awesome!!! Plus if you have an action replay it's got a few cheats so you can get the hang of it first.

hehe nah that was obviously sarcastic, I have to say though I actually find R-Type Final harder than Ikaruga
(of the miniscule portions of progress which I have made in either game). I think Ikaruga is always 'fair' (well you dont feel totally cheated), whereas R-Type Final steps into the annoying side of having to learn off whle levels by heart, also it can be quite confusing to work out what is in the background or not in R-Type Final.
TurboGrafx-16 shooters are great introductions, actually. They are not as much the bullet hell variety so much as the shoot anything and everything that moves type. I prefer swarms of enemies to shoot to swarms of bullets to dodge with only a few big enemies to kill. The former is just a better model for getting newbs into shooter action more quickly.
Seconded. Gunbird 2 on easy setting. It's entirely possible to blow through it in no time. Plus, MorriganGagaMan wrote:Some of the Dreamcast Psykio shooters like Gunbird 2 and Cannon Spike have a big variety of difficulty settings (about 8 I believe, from extremely easy to...you get the idea), so they may be a good way to slowly get used to them.
