Hey guys, I'm well on my way to finishing a new genre article on defining games and series of survival horror. While I highly doubt there will be any real surprises on the list, I wanted to ask other horror game fans what titles they would consider honorable mentions for the article.
Personally, I feel the D series is worth mentioning, though I don't feel it deserves a full entry as defining the genre. Or perhaps digital actress Laura's work should be reserved for a Hidden Gems article? What about the F.E.A.R. series, which seems to be continuously expanding? What others can you think of and why?

How about Obscure? While not a spectacular game in its own right, its co-op feature is something pretty unique to its genre.
The Ring: Terror's Realm probably deserves a mention as well for being so downright awful.

I thought The Thing on PS2 was really good. Again, not defining. But it had some cool stuff, like keeping your party's trust levels high.
Re: Defining survival horror games honorable mentions
I don't think F.E.A.R. comes close to survival horror. It wasn't really scary at all, and there's always lots of weapons and powerups. There's really nothing in the way of puzzles either, and those have been a part of survival horror at least since AITD and RE. It felt more like a spooky half-life, but much more repetitive and bland. But I've only played the first.
I'd firmly support having D as an honorable mention. Those are some of the best FMV adventure games.
I haven't played it yet since I don't have a jaguar
, but AvP always gets mentioned as a great scary FPS.

I am a big fan of all the FEAR games, though I'd agree that they are more "spooky" then "scary". They are certainly not survival horror, as ammo is usually plentiful...but I'm not sure how important that is to your criteria. I have found them more frightening than the recent RE games, for example.
Re: Defining survival horror games honorable mentions
Hmm, I've decided not to include F.E.A.R. on the list, and I'm currently debating whether to include Obscure, though I'm leaning towards a no. Perhaps an honorable mention on the hidden gems article I'm considering writing next for its co-op, but I really don't feel it'll make the cut.
As for games that have, D is on there, as is Dino Crisis, Siren, and The Ring, if only because it defines just how terrible a survival horror game can be. I'm considering Condemned, but that might be worth a hidden games blurb as well.
I'm also starting to mentally compose the hidden gems list for the genre, but more on that later.

In order for it to be survival horror, I think you need to have the survival element just as - if not stronger than the horror.
FEAR is a great game, but not once did I find myself playing it wondering how to survive with limited resources. Condemned is probably a little closer, but you pretty much always have a strong weapon.
I haven't played too many survival horror games, but have you mentioned games like Kuon, Cold Fear, or Haunting Ground (PS2)?

I just saw your blog and it's awesome!

I got EO (jp version) for sega saturn except I don't got sega saturn console at the momment. Well Devil may cry is kinda like horror surival considering the orignal defvil may cry was suppose to be Resident evil 4 at the time. Never played with Dante inferno or Demon souls. There is also SIlent hill series. great that your are mentioning DIno Crisis series. house of dead, fatal frame
You can mention "Extermination PS2" game sonsidering it was part surrival horror genre. "first survival horror release on the PlayStation 2" Got the game, Im very busy with college this week, so I have very little to play it. It was same person who was working on the early resident evil games.

None of these are survival horror.
Re: Defining survival horror games honorable mentions
Deep Fear, might be better classified as a hidden gem being how obscure it is, but a great game in its day.
