Saturn Slowdown

Post by chriswy27 »

Well I modded the saturn and have been playing some CD-R's. Seems to work well enough however there seems to be a good amount of slowdown in particular games. Is there something wrong with my saturn / cd-r's or was I just too young to realize these flaws when I was little? Some games that do this are...

Virtual On
Castelevania SOTN (When fire effect occures during an enemies death as well as during the first (Final) Stage when the boss transforms and the 3D background comes while the old is falling off the screen)
Metal Slug (Intense moments like bosses or lots of enemies)

Just to name a few. Others will run fine though like Earthworm Jim II.

I believe the slow down in Metal Slug and Virtual On is expected - especially if your not playing Metal Slug with a ram cart. But I may be wrong, I never played either incredibly extensively on the console.

Castlevania: SOTN is known to have a lot of slowdown.

I've not played any of these games first hand but I would say that being a copy will have no effect on the speed that the games run, and this is just due to bad coding on the original. However when playing CDr's I find my saturn seems to take even longer to load certain games

If your Saturn is from PAL region (50Hz), then you would experience slowdowns when playing NTSC region games (60Hz).

Downloaded CD-Rs are predominantly NTSC region and can be patched to PAL region, but won't run in original speed unless a 50/60 Hz mod is applied to the saturn.

I know Metal Slug requires a RAM cartridge.
see here:

I personally have the Action Replay 4 in 1, and it works.

I've didn't think Vitual On or SOTN needed it though. But almost all arcade port fighters like Samurai Spirits and alot of Capcom games require it. If you have the original game it says on the back of the case whether RAM is required or not.

hope that helps
