Review: Mario's Tennis for Virtual Boy

Post by Michaelthurston »

So this is the first of my Series of Reviews for the Virtual Boy library.

Let's get things started off with Mario's Tennis.

Intro/menu 8
So you start the game up, adjust your focus and get going. Mario does a little intro of knocking a tennis ball in your face, and having the "Mario's Tennis" logo appear. It has a nice little 3D effect, but nothing too special. After that you see two selections, singles, and doubles. The only difference being that in singles, you play with one character, while in doubles you play with two.

So once you get past that menu, you have the option to select normal or tournament play, number of sets, and of course your character, and the computer's character. Simple, clean, and easy to understand. The characters for the game include: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, Toad, Koopa, and DK jr.

Gameplay 8
So it's a Tennis game, it's pretty simple, really. Just knocking the Ball back and forth on a Mode-7 type field. You use the Left D-Pad for Movement, A to hit over hand, and B to Lob the ball underhand. The games go on just like a normal Tennis match, until one side has one the Set. Nothing Complicated here.

Graphics 9
The Visuals in this game are fairly Decent, actually. When you get focused in on playing the sprites are really clear and well defined, and the 3D effect on the world is really good, actually. It does a lot for the Virtual boy's hardware. The characters have a really good animation set, and have some funny animations depending on how you're doing in game.

Sound 9
So I, actually, Love the Music in this game. The title screen music is good, and the music during the game is as well. I believe there are 3-4 different tracks in the game for the tennis matches. All very well done, and addictive.(to me, at least.)

So that was pretty simple eh?

So total, I give this game an 8.5. I mean, it's Tennis, how do you screw that up?
It's a very well done Pack in game, though I would have preferred a Mario platmformer to a Mario sports title.

That's all for now, Look out for the Rest of my Virtual Boy Reviews.

Next up is TeleroBoxer.

I like Michael Thurston. I like Virtual Boy. i DONT like Mario tennis. For whatever reason, i kept getting "fault" because of the bizarre forced depth perception. Its not me I guarantee it. (Check out all my perfections on Halo 3)
