Ok I finally figured out how to use my 360 controller:
1. Go to the options-keyboard and mouse-and check the use developer's console.
2. Start the game and hit the ` key
3. type exec 360controller_xbox.cfg for a 360 controller
or
type exec 360controller_pc.cfg for other dual analog controllers.
You know, I just tried them and think I prefer the keyboard controls after all

I was curious if I could build it into an arcade cabinet. But after playing it I think that it would be too difficult to map.

These are great. It gives the game tons of options. I like that you can enable a Left 4 Dead style AI director for spawning enemies.

It's also impressive that you can play the game as a first person shooter if you want (though I still prefer the top-down perspective):

We are so on the same wavelength. Give me a Spacehulk mod with random generated hulks.

Edit:
Turns out the Omnibus team that was making a Left 4 Dead mod is making it for Alien Swarm. So yes, there will be a Spacehulk version of AS in the near future.

Tried the 360 controller config. Hated it. It sucks. It just isn't responsive enough. I'll soldier on with the KBM controls for now. Hopefully somebody will hack in proper support for the controller rather than just a cfg remap.

I tried out the first person shooter mode earlier today. I'd play it that way, but I'd have to boost my mouse sensitivity quite a bit to make it feel right, and it experiences framerate drops that kill it for me. Has anybody else tried it?

i wasn't even aware of a first person mode. personally i think that would be fun. but i feel the best way to play is normal keyboard and mouse.
