- The three compilation movies included with Char's Counterattack and Miller's Report (compliation movies have Japanese audio only...)
Gundam 0079: The Perfect Collection (might be a Chinese Bootleg...)
10 individual volumes released by Bandai (English dub, but censored w/out Japanese version)
Malaysian Edition DVD (has all episodes together, might/might not be bootleg, but I'm worried about video quality.)

MY RED HAND IS BURNING! ITS LOUD ROAR ALLOWS ME TO GRASP VICTORY!
I don't know anything about Gundam, I just remember that line from playing Dynasty Warriors Gundam 2.
oh and also- Camille's a mans name, and I'm a man!
Sorry to be of no help whatsoever.

That's tough. I guess the ones from Bandai would be your best bet for quality but they will probably be a lot more expensive. The other collections seem like they would be fine as long as you made sure of the subtitles and of the quality of the seller.

The original Mobile Suit Gundam only received two releases here in America
One is the Bandai DVD set. 10 volumes using the Cartoon Network cut of the show. It's pretty good, actually. Volumes 9 and 10 are very hard to find, though. English Dub only but it is a quality dub.
Then there is the Mobile Suit Gundam Trilogy: It's the Japanese theatrical version of the show, 43 episodes cut down to 6 hours on three discs. It's Japanese only with english subtitles. It's also quite good but some of the movies (Journey to Jaburo and Soldiers of Sorrow in particular) are edited in a kind of choppy way that leaves you feeling a little lost. The third movie (Encounters in Space) is practically the official canon version of the last third of the series (in terms of events, battles, and mobile suit load outs).
If it's not one of those two...it's probably a chinese boot leg. Hope that helps. 0079 Gundam is my favorite cartoon of all time.
Also released officially here in America:
0080: War in the Pocket
0083: Stardust Memory
08th MST (freaking awesome)
Z Gundam
G Fighter Gundam (Gundam ball Z!)
Gundam F91 (meh)
Wing Gundam
Chars Counter Attack (should be required viewing in public schools)
G Saviour (great for a laugh)
Gundam Seed / Seed Destiny
Gundam 00

Anything from Malaysia/HK/China with English and Chinese subtitles that's extremely cheap will be shitty bootlegs.JokermanJohnny wrote:I'm llooking to get the original Mobile Suit Gundam on dvd, but there's a problem. For anyone who's a fan of the original Gundam, which of these versions should I get?

I've seen all of Gundam Wing, Char's Counter Attack I found by chance and enjoyed immensely. 09th MS Team is pretty damned good. I have Stardust Memory, but never actually sat down to finish it all.Flake wrote:0080: War in the Pocket

In my viewings, the older Gundam series were my most favourite. You actually loved/hated the characters, and the battles were intense. Gundam Wing..... that is a hard topic for me. I was a fan when it came out and still enjoy it, but I kind of grew out of it when I discovered the original 0079-0083 timelines.

The Z Gundam DVD release is pretty good; you get the original JP voice track and all the eps. Apparently the original Gundam series is missing an ep in the english release, though it exists in the JP release. You might be best off seeing if a fansub group has done the original Gundam series.

I've seen the fan sub of the ep that was dropped. It was terrible and deliberately omitted.MrPopo wrote:The Z Gundam DVD release is pretty good; you get the original JP voice track and all the eps. To be honest, I was disappointed with the Z DVD release. The new english VA's just threw me off. My feelings might be colored by the fact that I'm probably the only person in the world who ranks Z Gundam kinda low on the Gundam totem pole. I actually prefer ZZ to Z.

Ahh, I don't listen to the english VAs, so I didn't have that problem.Flake wrote:I've seen the fan sub of the ep that was dropped. Re: This is a question for fans of Gundam...
I'm intrested in getting Gundam F91, but I heard that A LOT of content had to be removed from the original story in order to fit into a movie timeslot. Also, I've heard that a two part novelization of the movie was released in order to make up for the content that was cut out.
In terms of Gundam F91, how do the novels and the movie hold up?
