Horror fans?
Horror fans?
I know we have a "last movie" thread but that isn't really the same thing. I want to talk about some great horror flicks and/or games. My wife and I are addicted to good horror movies, unfortunately they are fewer and fewer these days. Anyway here are a few of the favorites. Please chime in with your favs too.
Movies -
Suspiria - Perfect movie, watch it at least twice a year for over a decade now.
OldBoy - So awesome.
A Tale of Two Sisters- Beautifully shot and executed. Makes the top list easily.
Nightmare on Elm Street - Original only, remake sucks, sequels are subpar.
Dawn of the Dead - Original first then remake.
Dead Man's Shoes- Struggle to classify it as horror but love it none the less.
Alien - Who doesn't love it?
The Exorcist - Great movie.
Night of the Demons 1 & 2 - Cheesy classic horror, don't take it too serious and enjoy the ride.
Audition - Sick movie.
Shutter - Original NOT remake.
Running short on time and the list would be a mile long if I kept going so I'll save some for another post.
Games- Short list because I like atmosphere more than cheap zombie shock. Feel free to recommend.
Silent Hill - Original
The Ring (DC) - Best game ever. If you haven't played this you suck.
Alone in the Dark (DC)

Re: Horror fans?
You consider oldboy horror? I don't know if I can agree with that. Seemed more like a thriller, but genre disputes are always silly.
Aside from that, you could call me a horror fan, especially with alot of the old campy old school slashers a la Friday the 13th. Sure, they all suck after a while but they are tons of fun to watch.
Saw phantasm recently, probably going to see the entire franchise, I love the mythos and character arcs. The tall man is one creepy bastard.
Also, big Romero fan, dawn and night are classics.

I really don't know how Oldboy is horror. I hated that movie's ending, other than that, it was quite interestingAwesomeMonstar wrote:You consider oldboy horror? I don't know if I can agree with that. Seemed more like a thriller, but genre disputes are always silly.
I don't watch a lot of horror flicks but I like 28 Days Later, 28 Weeks Later, The Mist, The Descent, Ju-On, The Ring and that's all that comes to mind at the moment
I like how Evil Dead 2 parodied horror movies. I'm looking forward to Joss Whedon's Cabin in the Woods

I'm not familiar with that one, but do you guys know that Oldboy was part of a revenge trilogy? As we continue to move discussion away from horrorAwesomeMonstar wrote:agreed. Re: Horror fans?
I'm actually wearing an Ichi the Killer shirt as I type this. And no, it's not horror...and not really similar either. If you want a Miike horror film, try Gozu, though it's pretty bizarre. I also wouldn't consider Oldboy horror, but it's a great film, and my second favorite in the trilogy. Lady Vengeance is my first.AwesomeMonstar wrote:agreed. Anyone seen Ichi the Killer? Anyway, on to horror.
You're sick, chief. I beat that game over the course of a two week-long DC survival horror bender that involved me playing through The Ring, Carrier, Resident Evil: Code Veronica, and Blue Stinger, and it is hands down the worst game I have ever played. It honestly tainted my opinion of DC survival horror so much that I actually don't care for the three others I mentioned.jp1 wrote:The Ring (DC) - Best game ever. If you haven't played this you suck.
That said, I enjoy the genre, and finding new games in it is always a plus. Silent Hill 3 and Resident Evil 2 are my two favorite titles in the survival horror genre, but I've enjoyed quite a few, and it's hard to really come up with some additional titles to recommend at the moment, as I'm knee deep in writing articles about the genre (I've got what I consider the big names for the defining article pretty much pat, but if there are some hidden gems you'd like to see, by all means, talk about it. Somebody create a SH Hidden Gems thread in the Other Genres subforum. I'm too busy with work and too tired to do it).
As for films, I have to agree, Suspiria was amazing. I knew it was going to be an excellent film when I saw the closeup on the sliding door in the airport. Here are a couple of horror films I've enjoyed:
Nosferatu - What, did you think I wouldn't mention this classic? Germany produced a lot of horror in the silent film era worth checking out, and this is my favorite.
Them - Who doesn't love giant nuclear ants?
The Thing From Another World/The Thing - Both the original and John Carpenter's remake are awesome films worth watching.
Assault On Precinct 13 - It's Night of the Living Dead with gang members instead of the undead. Zombie fans should check it out.
The Haunting - A classic representation of the haunted house. The novel it's based on is a must-read for fans of supernatural horror.
All of the Universal monster films - I was raised on Frankenstein and The Creature from the Black Lagoon.
There's also a lot of films I'd like to watch. I've yet to see Switchblade Romance, Blackula, Eyes Without A Face, Cannibal Holocaust, so on and so forth...yeah.

Re: Horror fans?
I own and can vouch for all of the following:
Alien
Carnival of Souls (wonderful horror film in the public domain)
Dementia 13 (one of Francis Ford Coppola's first films...in the public domain)
Frailty (great film...but the ending is kind of a cop-out)
Fright Night (so awesome...it is like John Hughes made a horror film)
Halloween (original John Carpenter version)
I Bury the Living (public domain)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978 version...the original is more 50s sci-fi)
Jaws
Nosferatu (silent film...remains the best version of Dracula put to film...the remake is ok)
The Cabinet of Dr.Caligari (silent film with excellent dadaist sets)
The Changeling (the George C. Scott film, not the Angelina Jolie film)
The Descent (brutal horror film, but, for whatever reason, my wife really likes it)
The Evil Dead (the sequels may be comedies...but the original is intense)
The Exorcist
The Haunting (original b/w version...skip the awful remake)
The Last Man on Earth (public domain...arguably the best film version of "I Am Legend")
The Phantom of the Opera (silent classic)
The Ring (U.S. version...one of the few remakes to outdo the original)
The Silence of the Lambs (more of a procedural...but a lot of people consider it horror)
The Shining
The Thing (John Carpenter version...the original is less horror, more '50s sci-fi)
The Wicker Man (the original...not the Nicolas Cage version)
28 Days Later
I will also vouch for (i.e., I respect, but just did not like that much or simply haven't purchased yet):
Alice, Sweet Alice
An American Werewolf in London
Black Sabbath
Carrie
Dawn of the Dead (original and remake)
Event Horizon
Friday the 13th (original...does a great job ripping off the best parts of several superior films)
Hellraiser
Misery
Phantasm
Poultergeist
Psycho (Hitchcock's original...just an incredible movie)
Rosemary's Baby
'Salem's Lot
Scream
Seven (again, more of a procedural...but popularly viewed as horror)
Suspiria
The Blair Witch Project
The Brood
The Innocents (if most horror films are beer, this is champagne)
The Omen
The Re-Animator
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original)
Finally my wife and I have the following queued up, and I am really looking forward to them:
April Fool's Day
Cemetery Man
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1932 and 1941 versions)
Dead-Alive
Jacob's Ladder
Freddy vs. Jason
My Bloody Valentine (original)
Pulse (Japanese original)
28 Weeks Later

You have very good taste in film. "Them" is very good, but I really consider it more of a sci-fi film...like "Tremors" or "Godzilla" (which are also good). Those films kind of blur the line, however, so I can see where people might view them as horror.
With regard to Universal horror, I must say that "The Bride of Frankenstein" is my favorite (although it is too effectively parodied in "Young Frankenstein" to frighten); however, I have yet to see "The Creature from the Black Lagoon" or "The Wolfman".
[EDIT] You aren't missing anything by skipping "Blakcula" and "Cannibal Holocaust". Also, "The Happiness of the Katakuri's" is a very fun Miike film...with singing zombies!..if you haven't seen it.
Re: Horror fans?
I liked Cannibal Holocaust but I like the whole jungle/cannibal sub-genre. Slave of the Mountain God is a good one with Ursula Andress.
I recommend the Blind Dead films from Amando Ossorio.
I have never really gotten into Giallo but Dario Argento makes good films. I also love the films of Lucio Fulci. Zombi is probably my favorite zombie film after the first 3 Romero films and Return of the Living Dead. Night of the Living Dead will always be my favorite.
I am also a Full Moon fan, the Puppet Master movies are awesome. I like Puppet Master vs. Demonic Toys with Corey Feldmen.
The Lost Boys breaks into my top five favorite films ever as does Return of the Living Dead.
Street Trash is a great film but I guess it is not really horror.
CHUD
Basketcase
Chopping Mall
Slumber Party Massacre
Sleep Away Camp ...hell, pretty much all of the 80's slashers.
I did not like the Scream films when they came out but I do now.
