Pit Fighter

I would like to discuss this game in all its hilarious/horrible glory.

I used to play it a lot at the laundry mat for some reason. Probably because it was the only game there and I was too young to know better.

I think it's hilarious that Midway included this on their Arcade Treasure disc. I mean... you'd think they'd want people to overlook this one. But perhaps even they know it's so bad that it's important to video game history.

Nice thread BTW :D

My old job at a comic shop had this game. We also had Aliens as well Captain America and the Avengers.

You can be sure I was playing Captain America and Aliens way more then that Steaming Turd.

Yeah, but look at it this way, the game offered digitized sprites two years before Mortal Kombat would hit the arcade scene, so as far as graphics go, I'd say it was doing pretty good for 1990.

The ports on the other hand were usually butchered. The SNES port is particularly atrocious: lack of colors, voices removed, no options menu or multiplayer, sprites sized down, frames of animation removed(to the point one character has a 1 frame attack), health bars were removed in favor of numeric values, the entire concept of earning money was taken out, weapons and additional items were removed...the list goes on.

I paid $3 for my copy, which is about $5 too much. But I do like owning it since I can pull it out when people want to play or discuss bad games. I haven't beaten it yet, though I have gotten pretty far.

I just enjoyed it for the sheer novelty, and the aforementioned fork loads of cash. Bad controls, lame gameplay, but it had that Atari novelty of the time in the arcades. The high resolution graphics looked pretty though.

I don't care what y'all say, I have fond memories of this game and enjoyed it. Reasons?

A) It was probably one of the earlier fighting games I played for my Genesis. I rented it first, then borrowed a friend's copy, then bought it myself all within a short period of time in early 1991.

B) Coming from owning only a 7800 before owning my Genesis, I couldn't believe what I was seeing in those motion capture graphics. There was nothing else like it on any other system I or my friends had played.

C) There was just the right mix of violence and subtle sexuality that it made a 10 or 11 year old kid giddy and his parents a little perturbed (which made it even better :D ). Also, the similarity between the game and the awesome Bloodsportwas not lost on my blood-thirsty young mind. The game did a good job of setting the grungy/sweaty/illicit mood...

D) The actual gameplay isn't that bad considering the competition for the time. Keep in mind, I was also enjoying Fighting Masters around this time. Maybe the SNES version was horrid, but the Genesis version played fine as far as I was concerned.

Anyway, I loved Pit-Fighter and can't stand seeing it disparaged. Yes, my nostalgia may be clouding my vision some - but not so much that I am remembering a horrible game to be awesome...Right?
