I'm thinking you're alluding to the fact that using component cables on a ps2 won't let you play ps1 games?

This is only the case on a small subset of televisions. Most it will work fine on - It has something to do with the ps2 trying to display 240i as 480, or something to that effect (I'm no expert, just regurgitating what I've read)

You can run homebrew through it, play online games through Xlink [and as a GC-exclusive feature, play some games online that don't even support LAN!], and an Ethernet cable just looks awesome coming out of the Gamecube. :D Another reason is, as you stated, the Game Boy Player. This is still a great option, because it can play Game Boy/Color/Advance games in 480p, which looks positively glorious!
THIS. No worries of dealing with Wii updates that disable home brew.

well, huh. figures it doesn't work on my tv. i'll do some more reading.

it does the same thing with Ico, though. and the movies on Ring of Red don't work properly either.

I think Betamax001 meant 480i. ICO doesnt hav a 480p mode.

There is the Xploder for games, on my TV I did get a smaller image at 1080i.
Unfortunately my CRT HD has no Zoom to compensate.
On the plus side I did get 480p out of 480i only games.

CRT, i figured you'd be the one to ask about this. i just did about 15 min. of googling on the topic and the general consensus is that for the most part, ps1 games do not work well with a ps2 connected via component cables. i can't really find any concrete information on this, mainly just some old forum posts, but do you (or anyone else for that matter) know of any place that has a more detailed look at the issue?

I don't see why PS1 games wouldn't work. Just checked PS1 Ace Combat, worked fine in the PS2 but no graphic improvement over running in a PS1 console, a 480i image. Only the PS2 Component cables are hooked up. PS1 has S-Video with just as good a pic with PS1 game running. In all honesty, I prefer playing PS1 games on the PS1. Overprotective of wear and tear of PS2. I have read from some members that the PS3 will smooth the images up say if running a game on a LCD widescreen.

Most stuff outputs at 480, but the PS1 cheated and went with 240 to save video RAM. Before component, this didn't matter since it would be end up as 480 because of cables used. But with a component cable, it outputs at 240 and can cause glitches when the TV gets it (some TVs handle this better than others)
