I don't see what the fuss is about that. Even if I put my hands over the black strips, I still get the same reception. Even during a phone call. This was indoors too. I usually get much better reception outside of this house. In the garden I was getting full 5 bars. In the house I get around 2 or 3 bars. All the phones do it though. It's just something to do with how this house was built.

I think if in a low bar area might be an issue. Agree, other phones have a similar problem, just that the iPhone is in the limelight right now and with all the new subscribers clogging up the system.

Well exactly, low reception area it goes with the territory. Any phone is likely to drop out in a low reception area. I complete agree. I pity the jealous types, who need to leap on any reason whatsoever to put the iPhone down. When deep in their hearts they want one just as much as everyone else.

I think the reason apple products are such flameable forum topics is that Apple fans keep calling everything the company makes perfect.

Now I will agree the iphone brought a revolution in internet phones in browsing/gaming/social networking and is by far the best smartphone out there, when it comes to software and most importantly software support (aka appstore)

But not everything apple makes is perfect. Faaar from it. Apple fanboys are still trying to convince me that the ipad is a magical device that will change the world of computing and personal entertainment, when in reality even they don't know what they need that overpriced thing for.

Heck I remember before the ipad was launched all apple fanboys kept saying you will be able to take it anywhere you go, you will have a very portable computer to watch movies and browse the internet, and that it's going to be 10000 times better than a netbook (which costs 200€ less).

After it was released and everyone saw that you just can't use the freaking thing on the move, like an iphone, they changed their propaganda to "It's something meant for home. Finally I'm going to be able to browse the internet and watch movies from my couch/bed (like you couldn't do the movies part without it and you are going to browse the internet on a device that doesn't support flash. And don't even get me started on how stupid buying the thing for reading books is). Also Steve Job's ass tastes great :D"


Also another problem is that people consider it a fashion item, and if you don't have one you are lame. That might stir plenty of anger. Heck I was talking with some people who have iphones, and I said I will be buying a cheap 150€ Nokia phone and they started attacking me to buy an iphone cause it's the best thing in the world. It's great but I'd rather spend the extra 400€ on something else. People should really respect other people's choice. It's bad enough that this happens on the internet (console wars PC/MAC wars and all) I don't want it to happen to me in real life. Cause I can't restrain my nerves and I might punch somebody one of these days.

The antenna problem on the iPhone is decidedly NOT like typical antenna problems.

For one, holding the parts of the phone where you "bridge the gap" is the ONLY way most people have ever held a phone. This is a hardware design flaw that causes me to lose 3-4 bars of service and drop calls/quality easily in 75% or more of the locations I've been in (3G or not). The only fix is to add something to your phone (e.g. a case). I'm hoping Jobs + company at the very least provide bumpers or something free.

Additionally, there are other odd issues with the phone (such as my sim problem) that are widespread. So my first impression of owning an Apple product is exactly what I suspected: simple, beautiful, but with a few fatal flaws. To me, that sums up most things made by the company. I'm keeping the phone and will deal with the flaws because, for me, they are less serious than those of the EVO or comparable phones.

As for the fanboys and fashionistas, they are probably douchebags beyond issues of phone ownership, so fuck em.

I don't understand this. No matter how hard I try I simply cannot hold my iPhone 4 in a way that affects signal quality. Even touching every single part of metal on the damn thing still won't drop a call. Is my iPhone magic or something?

the UK is probably more densely populated than the US so it makes sense that you will have better reception, since there is a much smaller area to cover.

Let me see if I understand:
there is a design flaw in the product as one of the natural places customers hold the phone hinders performance (significantly or not depending on signal strength, so this isn't perhaps a major flaw). Apparently on the 3GS the antenna was in a different place and it was a bit better?

They can't do much about it now, but I'm guessing they may do so in further hardware revisions of the iPhone4 by re-arranging things around inside. Most people use the thing with a silicone protection though, don't they? Apparently that helps as people won't hold the thing right on top of the antenna further.
