It's about time I got a Saturn

Post by vapester »

.....I currently have a black Dreamcast, a Genesis 1, and a Sega Master System sitting side by side in front of my TV. And they look sweet! But it's about time I finally got a Saturn. I've actually never played one before, they were so expensive back in the day. But i've been doing a little research lately through this site and youtube. And I can see there are many games i'd like to play, mainly of course Panzer Saga. I didn't even know there was a Shinobi Legions until yesterday, and Revenge of Shinobi is one of my favorite games of all time on any console, the best music in an action platformer for sure. Anyhow, I have some bills i'm catching up with right now, so i'm gonna at least research it a little for now since I know almost nothing about it. For now, my question is this. It seems the best way to go is to just buy a Japanese Saturn so I can play all region games right? Well except PAL, but I don't give a yank about that, hehe j/k. But really? Then I just buy memory later right? There are no major differences besides cosmetic are there ? It would be cool to have a black one to match my other Sega systems, are there Japanese black ones that would work for me ?

Not sure about black japanese saturns, but if you dont mind a bit of soldering you could fit a switch to any saturn to change the region depending on what game you want to play, or you could get an action replay cart that does the same thing, or you could get a modchip to allow you to play copies and make a copy of the import games with an altered region code

...ok thanks. I'm still debating the puchase, but when I have some extra $ i'll get one. I'm just trying to look for more games i'll actually play. So far I see Panzer Saga which seems worth buying a Saturn alone, Shinobi Legions, Nights into Dreams, maybe Panzer Zwei, and well, i'm hoping I find more that catch my interest. I have all the Dreamcasts top shooters and fighting games. I still need to get a PS2 so I can catch up on the Sega games made for it and others like R Type also. Why wasn't the Dreamcast just made backwards compatible..........sucks.

it has significantly different hardware, the main reason you can't just emulate all those saturn games with any degree of success even on todays computers is the saturn's hardware setup is rather unique.

if we still can't get it right today, there was no hope of software emulation on the dreamcast to allow backwards compatibility.

I bought a US Saturn for 35 bucks at a used game shop and have seen several at thrift stores for around that. If you live in a small town it may be a little tricky, but otherwise just look around town and check Craigslist. All you usually have to do is replace the little watch battery in the back and you're good.

Now for imports, yes you can mod it, but if you don't want to go through the trouble just buy an import key. You can search on e-bay or try this store: http://www.ztnetstore.com/index.php
I bought the Action Replay 4 in 1 for 25 bucks. Which yes does has an annoying load screen, but all you have to to is hit a couple buttons and take it out if you're not playing imports and don't need extra RAM. It provides an import key, extra RAM(for fighters and arcade ports), back-up memory(which you will really need), and a useless game genie type thing. yep.

A white dreamcast would have looked mighty uncomfortable in there.

I don't know. Times are changing. People don't really even see color anymore.

....i believe in equal oppurtunity entertainment, but actually just today my black Dreamcast started shutting down on me during load times. I thought they were indestructable. Do I buy a new laser, try and clean my existing one, or just throw down a pack of Newports ???

Black Vs. White

Post by kevinski »

Honestly, my white Dreamcast looks right at home next to my Wii. All of the black consoles are on their own shelf, so everything looks fine. I never really cared much for the black Dreamcast, despite owning one. I actually have seven of them, with six of those being white.
