Being the history buff that I am, can anyone recommend some good games that are very historically accurate in the material that they deal with? For example I have been interested in getting The History Channel: Civil War – A Nation Divided, since it is pretty cheap used. Mostly I am interested in screening the game for historical accuracies and bias more so than I am actually interested in playing the game. Although I read it was pretty average, meaning it wont be too painful to play through, plus I'll get achievements and we all love those.
But of course I would rather play games are actually good, and please refrain from the countless WWII FPS's there are, I am not too interested in those or WWII in general.

Oh that Custer... although I am sure he never raped an Indian woman tied to a pole.Hagane Hiryu wrote:I believe you are looking for Custer's Revenge.

Robert E. Lee: Civil War General is a good turn based strategy game from Sierra. It features some actual battles from the Civil War, but not all of them are real.

I hear that North & South for the NES is a good strategy game.

The Dynasty Warriors series is based on The Romance of the Three Kingdoms novel, a culturally important and well known account of Chinese history. The games usually have a database with lots of info on the characters and events, although the series certainly takes a lot artistic license with the characters. They are not exactly perfect representations of the characters
I generally recommend DW 3 and 5 to people. There are way too many installments, spinoffs and rehashes of the DW series to keep track of

North & South was a blast back then.
The Civilization series might be good, but clearly not historically accurate.
The Dynasty Warriors, Nobunaga's Ambition, and Romance of the Three Kingdoms series all deal with Chinese and/or Japanese history.
PC Strategy games are the most likely to tackle history in a realistic way, though of course, since interactivity is involved, history will not unfold completely accurately. Here are a few PC strategy titles to look into though:
Total War This series by Sega is great, depending on the version you get it deals with Rome, Napolean's battles, the Age of Enlightenment, Shogun era, or Medieval times.
Hearts of Iron II WWII
Europa Universalis Europe between 1400s-1800s
Company of Heroes WWII. Great RTS game.
Tropico 3 Generic caribbean dictator simulator. You are "El Presidente". This is a cheeky little game. It's very funny and though it doesn't have an accurate dates and facts kind of history to it, it smartly plays out political corruption and shady politics, with clear references to people like Castro and others.
Age of Empires Stone Age through Classical Period of Europe and Asia.
Birth of America French Indian War and American Revolutionary War

Thanks J T, I'll check some of those out. Military History Magazine gave Napoleon: Total War a favorable review so that might go with that one first.
