If we want to say do not post a thread without doing research then we might as well erase more then half of the threads here. Do you people treat your real life friends this way? If a friend asks you a question do you just say "look it up your self." I hate to tell you but part of researching is asking questions.
Ebay is good for finding a average single game prices but is not good for bundles and varying condition items. I think his idea is fine. If you look at other gaming forums a lot of them have a "worth/value forum".

no but now that you've given me the idea, I'm going to.pepharytheworm wrote:If a friend asks you a question do you just say "look it up your self."
But seriously. I see what you're saying. Forums are indeed meant for discussion, no matter how banal. I think what bugs me MORE is like a poster with 5 posts that comes on here to ask how much Mario/Duckhunt is worth in the hopes that someone might be like ZOMG Can I buyz that from youz???

In some cases, yes, I tell them to RTFM although I tell them in a nicer way such as "I do a google search with the terms xyz and found this". A couple of times, they get the hint. This is true for family/friends, work, and internet.pepharytheworm wrote:Do you people treat your real life friends this way? If a friend asks you a question do you just say "look it up your self." There's no excuse for people to not do basic research. Once you've done some homework, I don't mind any follow-on questions.
Re: Suggestion for forum and "What is this worth"
There are a lot of nuances in some stuff that just looking at completed items in ebay (when there's many) might be missed.
I know that when I research a particular item (like when I was getting my PSP) I will have a pretty good knowledge about the range of going prices depending a lot on extras, condition etc. that I just would not have by just looking at ebay completed items in a quick search.
My idea with this is that people post a new thread about item X. You only need to look at that thread (based on the title) if you want to, presumably either because you are into that item yourself and either know or want to know.
I don't see how splitting it off from the single thread would make people read it, if it was marked in a specific forum posters that don't care can easily avoid it just as well, and if the title catches your eye...
Ivo.

But once that new request falls off the front page how would it be found among thousands of other posts?Ivo wrote:My idea with this is that people post a new thread about item X. There is Search, but maybe in a single Whats this worth" post also helpful?
Look at the front page. Everytime a new post is created an older one falls out and dies. There is a Darxide 32x - whats it worth? there right now. Can't blame the OP who puts it there to get a better exposure for more replies. But imagine the front home page clogged up with individual requests bumping down other recent various topic posts that might be missed. Take this not only for your idea but for any new type of post. A new post which is similar to an older same related topic.

Re: Suggestion for forum and "What is this worth"
I think the "Video Link Dump Thread" is just plain dumb. There's an entire section for "videos", why try to condense it into one thread.
Also, I tend to rarely visit that thread because I'm not interested in EVERY video. If the title said what the video was it could spark my interest.

If there is a specific forum for it, the new "What is this worth" threads won't displace threads of other nature from their specific forum front pages.CRTGAMER wrote: Look at the front page. My response to your question about elapsed threads: It is IMO easier to look in the specific forum for threads that interest you than in a thread for posts that are spread throughout that interest you - in the forum, the threads have the title only. In the thread, the posts have the text (often no title) so it is much harder to find at a glance.
I mean, I just noticed that we have a "Deals" forum just for people to brag, and yet we condense every price check (which is at least more marginally useful than bragging posts) into a single thread? I don't think this is consistent.
I don't mean to be confrontational here. If the actual purpose is to sweep the requests "under the rug" that is an editorial decision that Racketboy and the mods can rightfully take - the single thread seems to be a good way of achieving that.

THIS PAGE. The Recent Forum Discussions, once bumped off here, the thread goes dead.Ivo wrote:If there is a specific forum for it, the new "What is this worth" threads won't displace threads of other nature from their specific forum front pages.

Re: Suggestion for forum and "What is this worth"
I see. I don't use that much, I rely a lot more on "View new posts" and if you want I can start collecting examples where threads not in that page have received new posts and continued active and I guarantee there will be plenty of examples (if you want I can exclude threads that came back after months of not being posted on, as that probably happens through specific searches rather than remaining active).CRTGAMER wrote:THIS PAGE. I don't think that displacement of other threads from that page is (just by itself) enough to justify not creating the specific forum (particularly when we already have one to brag about gaming deals), but it isn't my opinion that counts.
