You're right, in that it was generally anti-imperialist in broad terms. However, the whole white savior trope seems to undermine that, in my opinion. I don't really hate the trope entirely-- I actually enjoyed Dances with Wolves and The Last Samurai, despite resorting to it. But at least in Samurai, for instance, they establish early on that Tom Cruise's character already possesses a lot of the virtues the film glorifies prior to going on his jolly adventure to Japan-town.
In fact, saying sci-fi or western films are generally reflective of racial conflict past and present is like saying horror films are generally sexist. It's part of what defines the genre, and I saw no particular problems with Avatar that didn't exist elsewhere in similar films. That's not to say it isn't a problem, but that it isn't enough to derail a film in which the story is clearly secondary to the action and effects. I guess I didn't think it took itself as seriously as you seem to.
Perhaps I suffered from having seen interviews with James Cameron prior to seeing the film. He seemed to make it pretty clear to me that the film was a serious one with what he perceived to be a vitally important message that he just had to get out to people.

I think you're right to classify it as an action/effects film. However, I didn't find the action scenes to be well-done enough to captivate me, and I was tired of the special effects after about three minutes. Heck, I just watched District B13 last week or so. That movie has almost no plot, but it still gave me reason to care about what was happening and the action scenes were well-done enough to keep me interested. That's a lot more than I can say about Avatar

The remastered version adds some new scenes and dialogue, but it has been so long since I have seen the original that I couldn't really tell. Innocence was pretty good as well. It barely features the usual lead (the Major), but focuses on Batou and Togusa instead. The story really gave an idea of how Batou and Togusa became so close. Even though the anime series is supposed to be an alternate universe, this relationship definitely carries over. The one issue that really bothered me is the constant quoting of literature. I like how they throw a quote here and there from the Bible into the first film and the first season of the anime series relies heavily on Catcher in the Rye. Innocence gets absurd, though, and for a while it seems like every other line is a quote from some book. It is not like it gets confusing, it makes sense, it is just annoying. Maybe this is the way the Manga is, not sure. Anyhoo, I highly recommend the first film for anyone who hasn't seen it and the 2nd film for those who are fans.
My sentiments exactly with the exception of one thing, Ghost in the Shell 2.0 FUCKING SUCKED they took the cool green CGI and ultra techno futurist look of the original and covered it in bland brown "Modern" CGI, edited out scenes, changed dialogue, completely reanimated and inserted new scenes that had no relation to the plot, and generally wrecked one of my all time favorite movies.

All of this along with the fact that because of 2.0's release and Manga's loss of the license to the original version Warner Home Video refused to release the original unedited version in true HD. The copy of the original included on the disc is simply the DVD version up-converted to 1080p and slapped on the disc as if it were a meaningless bonus and that frankly pissed me off.

That movie is one of my all time favorites and a nerd-milestone for me when I first saw it so I got pretty pissed at how it was handled as if it were second rate.

Wow I better rewatch the original GITS. I haven't seen it for years so I could not pick out what was missing or changed.

I was gonna rent that. For someone who's never seen the original, would you recommend it?
I paid $4.25 to rent it and I feel it could have done more to make it worth more. Really, it's got a seen-it-before vibe. Maybe wait until it's on Starz or whatever?

Yeah, there are a lot of new scenes that are completely stuck in just for "dramatic effect" and so many scenes were altered from their original design to a newer darkened brown barely visible picture. I made a mistake by paying $30 when it hit shelves and was pretty ticked.

Here's a quick and dirty comparison (The original version runs in a window on the lower right corner and 2.0 on the rest of the screen for an easy comparison) I found a while back on youtube that I show to everyone I know who's considering buying 2.0:

The only thing I can say is that they really fucked up a classic. I mean right off the bat the first scene with Motoko on the rooftop ready to leap down in the thermoptics, arguably one of the most iconic Anime scenes of all time is almost completely erased from existence thanks to 2.0's so called "enhancements".

Not to mention the entire movie has now been colored completely brown, gray and orange. When compared to it's originally realistic and believable color scheme it just makes 2.0 look as bland and throwaway as the majority of current Anime from the last few years.

Just saw Predators. It is a whole lot better than the AVP movies, but it emulated the first movie too much. Only two or three parts we really great and memorable. The main problem with the movie is that it only touched on one genre. Predator was an 80's action movie with an alien hunting everyone in the second half. Predator 2 was a late 80's/early 90's cop movie with an alien hunting everyone in the second half. Predators was simply just aliens hunting everyone. This made the first act extremely boring, the second half makes up for it though. My opinion of it is mixed. Predator 2 is defiantly better. It was worth seeing in theaters.

Far Side of the Moon. I loved this movie. Philosophy majors will most likely retort that it's pretentious/shallow/confused but since I'm not one I can safely say I didn't get at least half of it, but still loved it all the same.
