What are the advantages of upgrading the hard drive? I know you will be able to store more games on it, but is it true you can transfer video files to the hard drive [as opposed to just streaming them]?

I don't have a PS3 but was curious if it was possible to backup your saves to different media? If so, it would be prudent to do this for your important saves in the future.

Yeah, if you're using a media server you can transfer them over the network quite easily by just hitting copy in the XMB. You can also transfer files, videos pictures and any sort of supported data you want onto the PS3's HDD via flash drive, memory cards, wi-fi etc...

Yeah, I've heard that some people just leave an SD card in their PS3 and back saves up to it every now and then. I think I'll start doing that, too.

When did yours freeze? Luckily, I was not that far into the game; it froze just a bit after I finished recruiting the members of my squad for the first time.

Yeah I think mine froze somewhere around there too...chapter 3 i think... At the loading screen for the third battle.

I then reset ps3 backed up made a full 3 hour format of my hard disk and now it runs smooth like silk.

So if you are getting the corrupted drive message in most cases you have gotten some b ad files on the system and/or a sector went bad on the drive causing some data to get lost. Note if you lost a sector this does not mean the drive is bad this is a normal thing that happens with hard drives and there are backup sectors that replace the bad one.

However from what I can tell the PS3 formatter has trouble closing out bad sectors when they happen. In those cases you will need to pull the hard drive from the system and format it with a computer. The link below will help you do this. Note if the drive fails a full format then most likely you will need to replace the drive but this does not happen much.
