^ I absolutely agree with all of that. I actually like most of Sonic & Knuckles' zones - I'd say Sandapolis is mostly a stain on an otherwise great game - but I don't like most of Sonic 3's zones. I can very much emphasise with turning the game off as soon as you reach Marble Garden.
I would have liked for Ice Cap Zone to have replaced Sandapolis Zone. The beginning would have been a fitting continuation of the ending of the previous level and it would have been suitable seeing as the next level is a lava zone.

Come to think of it, I don't recall ever playing them as standalone games. I'll probably just play Sonic & Knuckles from now on - maybe skip on Sandapolis and play Ice Cap Zone instead.

I also feel like some Sonic goodness right now.

Good luck with marathon - think you can bear playing through Marble Garden?

Sonic 1 clear. Only part I couldn't stand was the labyrinth zone. FFS so many cheap deaths, and worst of all I wanted to get all chaos emeralds, and I kept losing my rings in those stupid stages.

Also now that I mentioned it, the Sonic 1 special stages are total CRAP. It's so random and unfair. You also get very few chances to play them (12 chances for 6 stages, and that's only if you finish the level with at least 50 rings).

Got all chaos emeralds, loved Green Hill zone, Star Light zone (lovely music http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Cy8BDipACE ).

Scrap brain zone :

Act 1 fun
Act 2 a pain
Act 3 WTF why oh why another water labyrinth zone stage? WHY? did the people working at sonic team really think Labyrinth zone was so much fun, that they thought let's add another act of it as the final part of the game????

Good thing I know the shortcut at the start of the stage so in a minute it was over.

And..... the final boss was a huge letdown. The order in which I experienced the Sonic games on the mega drive is:

S&K, Sonic 2, Sonic 1, Sonic 3.

So after S&K's absolutely dramatic final boss fight (even if you exclude doomsday zone) Sonic's 2 epic chase into space (and lovely air battle stages) I was expecting something epic. So when as a kid I reached the final zone on Sonic 1, and beat the first room and saw robotnik get in his egg carrier I was expecting him to come back with a giant robot. But then I see the credits and I was WTF. Then I thought it was probably like S&K so I needed all chaos emeralds to play the real final boss. Got them all but same end boss. So the ending will always be kind of a let down for me.

And I'll be playing Sonic 2 later in the day, and tomorrow morning I'll try to beat Sonic 3&K to get the ultimate ending. Wish me luck. I'll probably need some psychological support to pass Marble garden, but after that it's only good stages, so I hope that will keep me going.

oh wait is Carnival zone before or after Marble zone? Cause if it's after I may be screwed a bit. :P

Sonic 2 clear.

You know for the past 10+ years I was calling the emerald hill zone green hill zone. It was the most known sonic level, they seam identical in theme (unlike angel island which is pretty different) and I never payed any attention to the level's name.

Wing Fortress Zone rocks. the music is so great.

I love how in sonic 1 with starlight zone, after a hard zone (labyrinth/metropolis) you get a relaxing zone to ease you.

Sky Chase zone <3 the music. So nostalgic.

Man I'm going to cry. This bring back so many childhood memories. Both of my parents work so in the summer, during the morning I had to stay inside, and of course I played the shit out of video games.

Sonic on the Mega Drive / Abe's Exodus / Age of Empires. After that I grew old enough to be able to go anywhere I wanted alone. But I still preferred to stay inside since summer mornings in Greece are hot so none of my friends wanted to get out of their houses until 5-6 p.m anyway. So more video games for me. :P

I'm a big fan of starlight zone and scrap brain zone in sonic 1, I love chemical plant and mystic cave in sonic 2. Unfortunately, I wasn't a big fan of ANY of the sonic 3 stages, and only Flying Battery Zone appeals in sonic & knuckles. Most of the zones that I like seem heavily coloured by the music, but I do take into account the level too.

Sonic 3 is my favorite sonic game. I love marble garden zone. The music is cool, the graphics are cool, I like the sliding part at the beginning with all the rings. I like all the bosses in this game. Launch Base is probably the coolest final level in any sonic game. Lots of really fast areas and cool design (what was it exactly? A desert base?).

Originally flying battery zone from sonic knuckles was supposed to come before ice cap zone. During the part where sonic rolls out of the ship and knocks the door off, he was supposed to ride the door down and use it as a snowboard.

Sandopolis zone was a pain in the ass. Way too long, especially act 2. Lava reef redeemed it though. Sky sanctuary was pretty cool, and death egg act 1 was alright. But death egg act 2 was too slow with all the gravity switching.

Well, I was having a good session of Sonic the Hedgehog yesterday but my nephew pulled out the cartridge. :d
Played it again today but lost my last two lives at the last boss.

I didn't mind Labryinth Zone so much, but I'd say it is one of the lesser levels.

I had trouble with the special stages when I played yesterday but managed to get all six emeralds by the time I reached Scrap Brain Zone. Overall I didn't hate them but they are quite shallow.

In that case, you really don't want to know the answer to that question. :P
I don't like Carnival Night Zone either. It doesn't help that I don't like the music.

Hasn't everyone? :P

I think the main things that bother me about Marble Garden Zone is that it feels rather messy to me - I run into quite a few dead ends when playing as Sonic and it seems one has to go slow for a lot of the level or you'll likely run into something hostile. Also, I don't like how often those spinning things are used - which you often need to progress, but if you hit something or jump off you often need to backtrack to get on one again.

=-0 I didn't know that! Sandapolis comes after Flying Battery Zone... so Sandapolis stole Ice Cap Zone's place!?
Well then, I feel better about skipping on Sandapolis the next time I play. :D

If you're generally having trouble with the last boss, just stand off to the far right for the "crusher" segments and play it safe. It won't give you every opportunity to land a hit, but you'll avoid getting crushed and only have the balls of lightning to contend with (which are easy enough to avoid).

I've played it that way forever and have yet to be killed when I wasn't just screwing around.

I actually consider the last boss of sonic 1 piss easy.

I haven't been able to finish my sonic marathon. Had lot's of work to do today. Hopefully I'll manage it tomorrow cause on Sunday I'm going on vacation.

Flying battery was supposed to be in Sonic 3. This was before sonic 3 and s&k were split up into separate games. It's on the Sonic 3 level select screen, along with Sandopolis and "mushroom valley"

I'm just a little rusty is all. =-d I was probably tired by that time - I hadn't slept for over a day before I went to sleep the day before.

I'm rather tired now as well so no Sonic for the moment, but I'll start it up again when I'm well rested.

By the way, has anyone ever got all the emeralds in Sonic 2 with Sonic & Tails together? For the longest time I found them near impossible until I thought to play Sonic alone... then I found it rather easy.

Oh, I figured it'd be Sonic & Knuckles you were talking about seeing as to my recollection it is the only half of the game with continuity between levels - is that wrong?
