15 Movies The Critics Got Wrong
Re: 15 Movies The Critics Got Wrong
After reading Stranger in a Strange Land I understood Heinlein perfectly
A movie based on that will surely get a PG rating and totally tank at the box office

I don't see how the facts that you list don't jibe with glorifying militarism. Unless, I guess, we have different ideas about what militarism entails. I tend to agree with the following definition:MrPopo wrote: The book did NOT glorify militarism. Hell, the book clearly states that only about 10% of the public service jobs one can take to gain citizenship is the military. And active members of the military cannot vote.
"the belief or desire of a government or people that a country should maintain a strong military capability and be prepared to use it aggressively to defend or promote national interests."
or
"Glorification of the ideas of a professional military class" and "Predominance of the armed forces in the administration or policy of the state"

Re: 15 Movies The Critics Got Wrong
Yup, book definitely hits all of that. The real interesting thing about the professional military as depicted is that the soldiers in the book understand its benefits, but the civilians seem to resent it or not understand it.Limewater wrote:I don't see how the facts that you list don't jibe with glorifying militarism. THis is usually what I think of when I hear militarism, and the book definitely does not hit this guy."Predominance of the armed forces in the administration or policy of the state"

Hell, the book Starship Troopers actually terrified the Science Fiction community, because up to that point nobody had really focused on mankind being militaristic in space. Instead they tended to focus on scientists exploring new worlds. It's what made the book so unique for the time.
And for the record, every individual I've ever met who was in the military and had read Starship Troopers absolutely loved it.

Predators has received a metascore of 49 so far. It doesn't look to be as terrible as those AvP movies. Anyone actually watched this yet?

UHF is another movie that critics got wrong. 32%? It's miles better than any crapfests passing off as 'parodies' nowadays.
