Any Links to Good MAME Guides?

Post by racketboy »

If you know of any good guides for setting up and making the most of MAME, please post them here.
Can be for beginners or advanced :)

Mr. Racketboy, what are you looking for in specific? I have used the program in the past and may be of some help. I will consider it repentance for the amount of help I have received from your website.

I am looking for a good tutorial also. I used to use MAME but it has been a couple years and I do not really remember how to set it up. What version of MAMEis recommended now? Is MAME32 still a good choice?

I run MameUI and it's been working well for me so far. It rolls up the variations of titles quite nicely and you get the screenshot preview, which is always nice. Plus it's free.

I think the 64 is for newer processors 64 bit Windows systems. Mame 32 works great, just dump pics and game roms in the appropriate sub folder. Configure the directory defaults in Mame.

MacMame also a breeze.

Is it best to DL a complete ROM set or pick and choose as I go? Seems like DLing one at a time could take a long time but DLing all at once would give me quite a bit of stuff I would never use.

I also keep seeing updates for the ROM set. Do you just find the ROMs, put them in the ROMs folder and then DL the update and run it somehow? I am guessing to run on a newer version of MAME the ROMs have to have the updates?

I use the complete torrents off of Underground Gamer. I just point it at my ROMs directory and let the torrent decide whether or not a particular file got updated (and if so it wipes what's there and downloads the new copy).

It would give me a ratio of .088 if I DL a whole ROM set. I do not use Underground Gamer much. :( I might just have to grab a few ROMs here and there for now.

Edit: I downloaded the Raizing ROMs collection from there but I can not get MAME to play them. I pulled them out of the folder but left them zipped and put them into the roms folder. Then I hit f5 to refresh in mame and they should come up, right?

Be sure to configure your Mame to look in the right Drive say C:\Mame\Roms folder.

The biggest headache about Mame is new versions sometimes require new checksum version of some Game Roms.
