Jesus, what the hell are you doing to your PS3s?!

Do you smoke or anybody else in the house smoke? If so you do you smoke in the house? That could be a reason why the PS3s are dying. Tobacco can get inside consoles and clog the vents/heatsinks up since dust will stick to it.

No smoking in this house, just 14 year old Son's hibernating marathons of Modern Warfare 2.
Smoke Free, Ports are dust free and open and sitting flat with plenty of room.
Son now has to play Metal Gear as a holdover with backup PS2.

Only smoke is blowing outta my overheated ears. :evil:
At least still in warranty again, free swap yet again.

Received 3rd warranty repair even exchange, yet again another 60gb Emotion chip PS3. The stuck Modern Warfare 2 disc made the return cross country vacation flight. I now have a nice collection of Sony PS3 shipping boxes.

Didn't want to post this till I received the replacement PS3.

Okay the changes made this time to Son's room are:
1. A heavy duty appliance power extension cord, older extension cord's low amp rating may have pushed the last one.
2. OPEN THE DAMN WINDOW! Last time son's room was nice and toasty from broiling LCD and PS3, was so wrapped up in marathon on line game session.

It does look like a George Foreman Grill.

Save the PS3 strictly for PS3 games. Real ironic for YLOD to appear playing a PS1-PS2 game in the PS3 when older consoles are so inexpensive, especially if already sitting in the shelf. A PS2 Fat console with HDAdvance/HDLoader a better convenient route anyways.

Lead Free Solder info.
The problem affecting both consoles is that the LEAD free solder on the under side of the GPU (Graphics processing chip) is disconnecting, over time, from the main board. As the board of the console heats up when on, the solder joints expand. When you turn the console off the solder contracts. Factor in LEAD FREE solder on what are known as BGA (Ball Grid Array) connections to the main board and and the high operating temperature of both PS3 and Xbox360, then you have a recipe for disaster.

THERE IS NO PERMANENT FIX ON PS3 YELLOW LIGHT OF DEATH

The only way you could PERMANENTly fix the problem is to remove all the lead free solder from the underside of the GPU and replace it with Leaded-solder. This is not only prohibitively expensive to do, but it is also ILLEGAL under the 2006 European Union Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE) and Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS). So don't believe anyone promising a PERMANENT fix.

I do not understand why people keep getting all butthurt about someone bringing up the YLOD. I do not remember these same people getting all up in arms when people would not shut the fuck up about the RROD.

Anyhow, this thread is an interesting read.

Thanks Octopod.

Well looks like Sony is rethinking PS2 emulation for the PS3 using the Cell Processor again.
A New patent filed, PS2 Download Rental Management soon to follow. Increased Yellow caution light.

So far on my third turn-around repair exchange. happy to report Fat 60gb PS3 still holding out. Curious that the Local Walmart has a PS3 Fat on display humming along ALL day, EVERY day playing a Demo disc inside an enclosed glass cabinet. I'm sure its the Launch 20gb model. Imagine the milage run time on that console!

Brings to light a point:

RoHS Lead-Free solder standards were implemented in JULY 2006
http://www.power-one.com/about/rohs_eu.html

California had a directive effective September 2003, and a compliance deadline of January 2007.
https://www.iaaqaservices.bureauveritas ... 43376.html

Sony proposed but not clear a compliance in 2005. PS3 launched in NOVEMBER 2006. Perhaps the early launch as in store display models were manufactured with reliable LEAD SOLDER? A chance early consoles may have been built before the lead free compliance cutoff date? Curious of fail rate of 20gb vs later 60gb and 80gb models. Have read of all three models having YLOD but unsure of the ratio. An interesting thing to find out, that lead solder possibility on launch models.

Go green, green of your money melted away to Sony that is.

Noticed local Walmart now has Slim PS3 to coincide with the new narrow display layout. Damn! A shame, would have liked to have bought that old Fat PS3 that ran all day every day so reliably consistent. Enclosed in that glass case cooking and still running, Maybe it did have the leaded solder?

ROHS was implemented between 2003 and 2004, so no it wouldn't have.

Okay this seems to confirm one thing. The store displays are different, at least in internal rom.

A reference chart handy if one ever buys a PS3 demo unit.
http://shop.ebay.com/videogamesdx/m.htm ... m270.l1313

What is a DEMO PS3 System?
A demo PS3 system is the system that you see on display at Best Buy, Target, Walmart, etc.

What can I do with the DEMO PS3 System?
You can play PS3 Games and watch Blu-Ray Movies

What can I NOT do with the DEMO PS3 System?
You CANNOT play PS2 or PS1 games (except Emotion Chip models)
You CANNOT go online to play PS3 games over the Playstation Network (PSN)
You MUST enter the same Demo Unlock code each time you turn on the PS3 system (shown below)

Why should I buy a DEMO PS3 System?
If you do not need to play PS3 games online or PS2/PS1 games (except Emotion Chip models), want to get an inexpensive Blu-Ray Player (w/future 3D Movie capability), don't mind entering the unlock code each time and are looking to save a lot of money you should consider buying the DEMO PS3 System!

Unlocking The PS3 Demo Mode:
Go to "Security Settings"
Highlight "Security Settings"
Press L1+R1+Select+Square (all at the same time)
Enter the codes below associated with your firmware version
Note: You will need to reenter the code each time the PS3 is restarted

1.5x = 5202
1.6x = 7568
1.7x = 0506
1.8x = 7712 or 7259
1.9x = 2737
2.01 = 0219
2.10 = 2464
2.20 = 4801
2.30 = 6558
2.41 = 9015
2.42 = 9015
2.50 = 6258
2.60 = 8783
2.70 = 7164
2.80 = 7897
3.00 = 2310
3.01 = 2310
3.10 = 5081
3.15 = 5081
3.21 = 7818
3.30 = 3512
3.40 = 2998
3.41 = 2998

DO NOT UPDATE THE DEMO FIRMWARE BEYOND 3.41
UNTIL DEMO UNLOCK CODES ARE AVAILABLE
