PS3 Corrupted Hard Drive
I was just playing Valkyria Chronicles on my PS3 today when the game suddenly froze when loading, and I had to force the console to turn off. When I turned it back on, the PS3 gave me an error message saying that my hard drive was corrupted, and that it would try to recover it. However, whenever I try to do this, it always freezes at 32%, and restarts itself, making no progress. Has anybody else has this problem? Is there any way to recover the hard drive without formatting it and losing all the data?
Re: PS3 Corrupted Hard Drive
Sorry dude, you're stuffed
Format it on PC through compmgmt and the have the PS3 re-format it... Sorry, plus side is VC is great and you get to play it twice!

You are almost surely SOL as far as your data goes....Krooner wrote:Sorry dude, you're stuffed![]()

But, as pointed out above, it's easy enough to fix. HOWEVER, I would advocate not reformatting this hard drive, and just getting another one to put in there. There might be something wrong at the hardware level with that drive, and it isn't worth having is screw up again and having you lose all your saves, etc. again

I'm trying to get the drive tray open now, but there's one screw that will not come out no matter how hard I try, or which screwdriver I try.

It is the blue screw?
If so, you need to push in on it and gently but firmly twist like hell to get it out. After that the HDD and caddy will slide right out.

No, it's the one to the right of the blue screw. Anyway, I eventually forced it out, and was able to format the drive. What a shame. All those hours of Fat Princess are wasted.
Well, at least it's working now. I would get a new drive for my PS3, but they're really expensive; I think I'll just save up for one. How ironic; I play the PS3 more than my 360 because I figured it would be the console less likely to break down on me!

Are you sure you're looking at the right type?
I've been thinking of upgrading to a 250GB drive lately and this one at $60 shipped is pretty affordable for the capacity:

Hard drives are hard drives, prone to error because of all the moving parts inside.
Until Solid State HD's become larger, cheaper and live longer, we're stuck with what we've got.

Re: PS3 Corrupted Hard Drive
1. This is exactly what happened to mine. It also froze at 32%.
2. Valkyria Chronicles is so awesome. I love that game.
3. When you do put your Hard Drive back in, I'd recommend not tightening the screws too much. It would be horrible to strip one of those screws and then never be able to get that drive out again.
5. I put in a 500gb for around $60. Mine's backwards compatible too. I'd definitely recommend upgrading the HDD.
