At the risk of looking like a total douche, I have news. It sure wasn't Sony's fault this time. Adderall, you left this thin, blue transparent film attached to the rear magic key piece. The film had begun to peel and curve upword, possibly due to cold temperatures during the shipment. I cant believe I didn't notice this before. This explains why my scratches are more like foggy smudges, and why the scratches are proportional to gameplay time. The little film piece was rubbing against the discs so slightly, but after 10,000 revolutions can you bet it's ganna leave a mark. So there you have it. I peeled it off and no more scratching. I'm going to have to go back and verify the data on all my games, and reburn the ones I cant fix with a little buffing out.

@ Adderall - I heard the same clicking sound when it was scratching my MGS2:S... I then let the PS2 power up, lid open, no game, and it's the lens that goes up and down trying to focus I guess and it's the guard rails on the lens that scratched my disc... If that's what happened on your side... :?
Yeah GOW is pretty good so far, but still overrated. Pretty good mechanics, amazing music and presentation. But the manliness is going a little overboard. They really want out of their way to share bare breasts at every turn. It surprises me why this game took no flack from the media, when far more tame games have. I'm not against it, but there's a time and place for everything, and I can't take it too seriously when all I see are distraction tits.

I just ordered MGS2:S on amazon with the help of a $10 gift coupon they gave me for taking a short survey. I couldn't find it in any stores nearby. I only want it for the vr missions, since the story in MGS2 is just terrible compared to 1 and 3.

Some Hollywood Video stores that have a Game Rush will buff disks out with a nice, expensive machine for $5 a disc or $15 for 5 or something like that. That's how it was a couple years ago, anyway. Since those are surface scratches they should buff right out.

wow.... I'm glad it is something fixable. I guess I never took it off because it never gave me any issues. You're right it must have come up during the shipping or something.

The front magic key piece came off as well, most likely for the same reason. I used regular tape to hold it down, but I'm considering the tiniest drop of super glue.

Wow, guys. Super glue was a BAAD idea. I broke the power/reset switch on the front chip.

Good news is I was able to get a little creative without having to buy that $30 replacement. I ripped the tiny switch box off the chip, and soldered a bridge between two contacts which I assumed the switch box was responsible for making a trace between, when pressed, and sure enough, it works. I won't have the ability to tell the ps2 the lid is open anymore, but at least I can still play all the games. Close call.

FYI, he sells a $10 cheaper version that lacks the infrared receiver, which no one really uses anyway. I would if the remotes had a power off function, but they dont.
